Little Bird Ornament

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Bird is made from 4 pieces: Head/Body, 2 Wings, and a Tail.
2. Each piece is worked in continuous rnds. Do not join and do not turn at end of rnds.
3. Wings and part of Tail are worked with 2 strands of B held tog. Wind B into 2 separate balls before beginning.

HEAD/BODY
Beg at top of head, with A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in first ch. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 18 sts.
Rnds 4 and 5: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 6: Sc in first 9 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around - 21 sts.
Rnd 7: Sc in first 9 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around - 24 sts.
Rnd 8: Sc in first 9 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 27 sts.
Rnd 9: Sc in first 9 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around - 30 sts.
Rnd 10: (Sc2tog, sc in next st) 3 times, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 11: (Sc2tog) 3 times, sc in each of next 11 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each st to end of rnd - 29 sts.
Rnd 12: Sc in each of next 15 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each st to end of rnd - 31 sts.
Rnd 13: Sc in each of next 16 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each st to end of rnd - 33 sts.
Rnd 14: Sc2tog, sc in each of next 15 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each st to end of rnd - 34 sts.
Rnd 15: Sc2tog, sc in each of next 15 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each st to end of rnd - 35 sts.
Begin to stuff piece. Continue to stuff as work progresses.
Rnd 16: Sc2tog, sc in each of next 14 sts, sc2tog, sc in each st to end of rnd - 33 sts.
Rnd 17: *Sc2tog, sc in next st; rep from * around - 22 sts.
Rnd 18: *Sc2tog; rep from * around - 11 sts.
Fasten off.

WINGS (make 2)
With 2 strands of B held tog, ch 2.
Rnds 1-3: Work same as Rnds 1-3 of Head/Body - 18 sts at the end of Rnd 3.
Rnd 4: Sc in each of next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st to end of rnd - 21 sts.
Fasten off.

TAIL
With 2 strands of A held tog and leaving a long beg tail, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 4 sc in first ch.
Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - 8 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 12 sts.
Fasten off A.
Join 2 strands of B with a sl st in first st of Rnd 3.
Rnds 4-7: With 2 strands of B held tog, sc in each st around.
Rnd 8: (Sc2tog) 6 times - 6 sts.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Finish stuffing bird then sew opening closed. Sew Wings and Tail to Body. Cut a small triangle from orange felt for beak. With sewing needle and thread, sew beak to Head. With brown yarn, embroider French knots for eyes. Knot a length of A or B to top of Bird for hanging loop.
Weave in ends.
