Image of Misty Lace Scarf

Knit this unique openwork scarf with big needles and watch as the ribbing begins to take on a diagonal shape. Bulky and beautiful, this neck warmer might just take the place of your favorite cowl.

9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates a new st.

The pattern st creates a diagonal effect causing the ends of the Scarf to slant slightly.

Cast on 21 sts loosely.
Row 1 (WS): K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2: K3, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until about 2 yds (2 m) of yarn remains, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

k = knit k2tog = knit 2 together
p = purl rep = repeat(s)(ing)
st(s) = stitch(es) WS = wrong side

The scarf turned out beautiful, but it doesn't match the picture (there aren't as many eyelets or ribs as the picture)...anyone else having this problem?
