GAUGE:

11 sts + 10 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) over sc worked in back loops only.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together.
2. Band is worked back and forth in rows, then last row is joined to first row to form a ring. The first rnd of Hat is worked across one long side of band.
3. After the first rnd all following rnds are worked through the back loops.
4. Hat is worked in continuous rnds. Do not join and do not turn at end of rnds.

HAT
Band
With 2 strands held together, ch 9.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 8 sc at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in back loops only, sc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 19 1/2 in. (49.5 cm) from beg.
Hold first and last row together, with sts matching.
Joining Row: Ch 1, turn, working through both thicknesses, slip st in each st across. Do not fasten off.
Hat
Rnd 1: Ch 1, working in the ends of rows across one long side of band, work 55 sc evenly spaced around; do not join - 55 sts at the end of this rnd. Place marker for beg of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Working in back loops only, sc in each st around.
Rep Rnd 2 until piece measures about 8 1/2 in. (21.5 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Note: As you work the next 5 rnds to shape the top of the Hat, continue to work in back loops only.
Next Rnd: *Sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around - 50 sts.
Next Rnd: Sc in each st around.
Next Rnd: *Sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around - 45 sts.
Next Rnd: Sc in each st around.
Next Rnd: *Sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around - 40 sts.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.
Thread yarn tail through sts of last rnd and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
