GAUGE:

24 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCH K1, p1 Rib (over an even number of sts) Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of row. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:

1. Shrug is worked as a rectangle, then folded and seamed.
2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

SHRUG
Cast on 216 sts. 
Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg. 
Change to St st (k on RS, p on WS) and work until piece measures 23 1/2 in. (59.5 cm) from beg. 
Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 26 in. (66 cm) from beg. 
Bind off.

FINISHING
Fold piece in half, bringing cast-on and bound-off edges together, to measure 36 x 13 in. (91.5 x 33 cm). Place markers on each of the 13 in. (33 cm) sides, 7 in. (18 cm) below fold for armholes. Seam each side from marker down to lower edge. Weave in ends.
