Beginner Hat and Scarf
Lion Brand® Hometown USA®
GAUGE: 9 stitches = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit all stitches in every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: If making Hat only, you will need about 2 balls of yarn; for Scarf only you will need about 3 balls. If making both Hat and Scarf, make the Hat first then use all remaining yarn to make Scarf.

HAT Cast on 46 stitches. Work in Garter stitch (knit all stitches in every row) until piece measures about 11 1/2 in. (29 cm) from beginning. Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.
FINISHING Thread yarn tail into blunt needle, then in and out along bound-off edge. Pull to gather for top of Hat. Knot securely, then use same yarn tail to sew seam. Thread yarn ends into blunt needle, then weave into Hat.
