Quick Cozy Hat

Lion Brand« Hometown USA®

GAUGE:

About 3 1/2 half double crochet stitches = 4 in. (10 cm).

STITCH EXPLANATION:

half double crochet 2 stitches together (Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 stitch decreased.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together. Wind yarn into 2 separate balls before beginning.
2. If you find it difficult to join the beginning chain into a ring without twisting the chain, Round 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a round, as follows: Leaving a long beginning tail, chain 20, half double crochet in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across; join with slip stitch in top of beginning chain - 18 half double crochet at the end of this round. Use yarn tail to sew gap at beginning closed. Proceed to Round 2.
3. The chain 2 at the beginning of each round counts as a stitch and should be counted when you are counting your stitches at the end of each round. Take care not to work a half double crochet into the stitch at the base of the chain 2, this would cause the total number of stitches in a round to increase.
4. On the last round of the Hat, stitches are decreased by crocheting 2 stitches together.

HAT
With 2 strands of yarn held together, chain 18.
Being careful not to twist chain; join with slip stitch in first chain to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 2, half double crochet in each chain around; join with slip stitch in top of beginning chain - 18 half double crochet at the end of this round.
Round 2: Chain 2, half double crochet in each stitch around; join with slip stitch in top of beginning chain. Repeat Round 2 until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning.
Next Round: Chain 2, half double crochet next 2 stitches together, *half double crochet in next stitch, half double crochet next 2 stitches together; repeat from * around; join with slip stitch in top of beginning chain - 12 half double crochet at the end of this round.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through stitches of last round and pull to gather. Knot securely.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
