Ripple Luncheon Mats

Lion Brand® Kitchen Cotton

2 ripples = about 4 3/4 in. (12 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

1. Mats are worked in a ripple crochet pattern. The ripple pattern is easy to do, but it's important to remember that you may need to work several rows before the ripple pattern becomes clear.
2. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st. Fasten off old color.
3. Work over yarn ends of old color or weave in ends as you work.

Work 2 rows with A, 1 row with B, 1 row with A, 2 rows with D, 1 row with C, 1 row with D, 2 rows with B, 2 rows with C. Rep these 12 rows for Stripe Sequence.

MATS (make 2)
With A, ch 41.
Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, *(sc2tog) twice, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in each of next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch; rep from * across to last 7 ch, (sc2tog) twice, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in last ch - 4 ripples at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, *(sc2tog) twice, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * across to last 7 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st; change to B in last st.
Rep Row 2, continuing to change color as in Stripe Sequence, until piece measures 14 in. (35.5 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Reviewed by Laura Slack on 2015-06-26 ****
I like the design and pattern, but when I sc2tog, my work turns out much cleaner (on both sides) when I pull up the first loop in the front loop of the stitch I'm working into and then pull up a loop through the next full stitch. When I pull up the first loop using the full stitch, it makes my pattern much more loosey goosey. Using the front loop really cleans it up and makes it lie flatter. I also think it would fit our plates better with one more repeat of the ripple pattern in width - start by chaining 51. I do plan to make more with the modifications listed here! Fun to make, and easy to follow.
