Embroidered Sachets

GAUGE: Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

SACHET With A, cast on 45 stitches. Work in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) until piece measures about 12 in. (30.5 cm) from beginning. Bind off. Weave in ends. Felting Wash knitted piece by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. Pull piece into shape and allow to dry.
FINISHING Once felt is completely dry, use a steam iron to press the piece flat.
With dressmaker's chalk, draw 2 ovals about 3 1/2 x 4 in. (9 x 10 cm) onto felt. Our Sachets were designed to be organically shaped, so we drew freehand ovals. If you prefer, draw more symmetrical shapes onto the felt by tracing around a plate or other object. Do not cut out the ovals yet.
Embroidery With dressmaker's chalk, and following the contour of the drawn oval, draw a series of concentric rings onto the ovals. With embroidery needle and colors of your choice from B, embroider over the chalk marked concentric rings. We embroidered using straight stitches and satin stitch.
Assembly Once you are satisfied with the embroidery, cut the ovals from the felt. Lay each embroidered oval onto the remaining felt piece, trace around outside edge, then cut traced oval from felt. You will have 2 pairs of ovals. Hold one pair of ovals - one embroidered, one plain - together. With embroidery needle and B color of your choice sew pieces together with straight stitch. Before sewing the final 1 in. (2.5 cm) closed, insert funnel and fill piece with dried lavender. Finish sewing closed. Knot yarn ends and weave to inside of Sachet. |
