Toddler Hat

Lion Brand® Bonbons

GAUGE:

13 sts + 17 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in single crochet.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

  1. Hat is worked in continuous rnds, beginning at top of Hat. Work with RS facing and do not join at the ends of rnds.
  2. Back of Hat and earflaps are worked back and forth in rows across a portion of the sts of the last rnd of Hat.
  3. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st. Fasten off old color.

 

STRIPE SEQUENCE
Work 2 rnds or rows each with A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H.
Rep this sequence of colors for Stripe Sequence.

HAT
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: With A, work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Change to B.
Rnd 2: With B, work 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sts at the end of this rnd.
Note: For remainder of Hat, continue to follow Stripe Sequence.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around - 18 sts.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc; rep from * around - 24 sts.
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc; rep from * around - 30 sts.
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Rnd 7: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc; rep from * around - 42 sts.
Rnd 8: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc; rep from * around - 48 sts.
Rnd 9: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc; rep from * around - 54 sts.
Rnd 10: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc; rep from * around - 60 sts.
Rnds 11-22: Sc in each sc around, continuing to follow Stripe Sequence.
Do not fasten off.

Back of Hat and Earflaps
Note: Back of Hat and earflaps are worked in rows, over 40 sts of last rnd of Hat. Continue to change color following Stripe Sequence.
Row 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in next 20 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in next 2 sts; leave last 20 sts unworked - 40 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in next 20 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in last 2 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 3 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next 22 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in last 3 sts.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next 22 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next st, sc2tog - 38 sts.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 24 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next st, sc2tog - 36 sts.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 26 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next st, sc2tog - 34 sts.
Do not fasten off.

Edging
Change to G. With RS facing, work sc evenly spaced around entire outside edge of Hat. Sl st in beg st to join. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Ties (make 2)
Join G with sl st in point of one earflap. Ch 40. Fasten off. Rep on other earflap.
Weave in ends.

This turned out SO cute! I changed the colors, and added a flower to the side, but it came together really fast, and the pattern was very well written.
