STITCH EXPLANATION:


sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1.Hat is worked in continuous rnds, beginning at top of Hat. Do not join at the ends of rnds, work with RS facing at all times.
2.Back of Hat and earflaps are worked back and forth in rows across a portion of the sts of the last rnd of Hat.


HAT
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc; rep from * around – 24 sc.
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc; rep from * around – 30 sc.
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; rep from * around – 36 sc.
Rnd 7: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc; rep from * around – 42 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in next 20 sts, hdc in next 8 sts, sc in last 2 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 3 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next 22 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in last 3 sts.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next 22 sts, hdc in next 6 sts, sc in next st, sc2tog – 38 sts.

OUTER EYES (make 2)
With B, ch 2.
Rnds 1-6: Work same as Rnds 1-6 of Hat – 36 sc.
Fasten off.

INNER EYES (make 2)
With C, ch 2.
Rnds 1-4: Work same as Rnds 1-4 of Hat – 24 sc.
Fasten off.

BEAK
With D, ch 2.
Rnds 1-3: Work same as Rnds 1-3 of Ears – 8 sc.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Sew Ears to top of Hat. Center a button or felt circle onto Inner Eye, then center Inner Eye onto on top of Outer Eye. Sew to Hat through all layers. Sew Beak to front of Hat, centered below eyes.

Ties (make 2)
Join A with sl st in point of one earflap and ch 40. Fasten off. Rep on other earflap.
Weave in ends.

While this is a super cute hat.....the measurements are completely wrong!! I do crochet somewhat tight, so I chose to go with an I hook and I even added in a couple of extra rows because it looked so short. Now that it's done, it barely fits my 3 1/2 month old! This hat only fits 0-3 months, not anywhere near the size needed for a toddler!
