Crochet Hooded Poncho

Lion Brand® Jamie®

19 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Pattern st.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

Rows 1-3:
Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, hdc in each st across.
Rows 5-7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Row 8: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, dc in each st across.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Pattern st.

1. Poncho is worked in 2 pieces: Front and Back.
2. Front and Back begin with an edging strip. Sts for the body are worked along one edge of the strip.
3. After shoulders have been seamed, hood is worked directly onto Poncho.

Lower Edging

Ch 11.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch counts as first hdc) and each ch across - 10 hdc at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc in this row and in all following rows), turn, hdc in each st across - 10 hdc.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 18 in. (45.5 cm) from beg.
Body Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, do not turn, work 84 sc evenly spaced across long edge of lower edging.
Beg with Row 2, work in Pattern st until piece measures about 10 1/2 in. (26.5 cm) from beg, including lower edging.
Fasten off.

Work as for Back until piece measures 7 in. (18 cm) from beg, end with a Row 4 of Pattern st. Note: End with a Row 4 means that the last row you work should be a Row 4.
Divide for Neck
First Side
Next Row:
Ch 1, turn, sc in first 41 sts; leaving rem sts unworked - 41 sc.
Note: This row counts as Row 5 of the Pattern st.
Beg with Row 6 of Pattern st, continue in Pattern st until piece measures same length as Back. Fasten off.
Second Side
Next Row:
Skip next 2 unworked sts following first row of first side, join yarn with sc in next st and sc in each rem st across - 41 sc at the end of this row.
Beg with Row 6 of Pattern st, continue in Pattern st until second side measures same as first side. Fasten off.

Hold Front and Back with WS together and sew shoulder seams, leaving center 30 sts of Back unsewn for back neck.

Row 1:
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in top right corner of neck. Ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 63 hdc evenly spaced around neck edge to opposite corner of front neck - 64 hdc at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until hood measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg.
Shape Top of Hood
Row 1 (Decrease):
Ch 2, turn, hdc in next 27 sts, hdc2tog, place marker (pm), hdc in next 4 sts, pm, hdc2tog, hdc in last 28 hdc - 62 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.
Note: Move marker up as you work the following rows.
Row 3 (Decrease): Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to 2 sts before next marker, hdc2tog, hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog, hdc in last 27 hdc - 60 hdc.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 twice more - 56 hdc at end of last rep.
Do not fasten off.
With WS facing, fold hood in half along last row. Working through both layers, sl st in each st across to join. Fasten off.
