GAUGE:

One square = 3 x 3 in. (7.5 x 7.5 cm).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.

NOTES:

1. Blanket is made up of 108 joined Squares worked in columns.
2. Square 1 is worked, then additional Squares are added by picking up stitches across edges of previous Squares.
3. Squares are added above Square 1 to make a total of 12 Squares for Column 1. Columns 2-9 are then worked, joining each to the previous Column.
4. Squares are worked diagonally, decreasing along a center line until just one st remains.
5. Refer to the Diagram to get a sense of how the Blanket is put together.
6. Each Square changes color following a Stripe Sequence.
7. Borders are picked up along each side of the Blanket, using a circular needle to accommodate the large number of sts.

COLUMN 1
Square 1
Stripe Sequence for Square 1: Work 1 row with A, (2 rows with B, 2 rows with A) 3 times, (2 rows with C, 2 rows with A) 3 times.
With A, cast on 26 sts.
Row 1 (WS): K12, k2tog, k12 - 25 sts at the end of this row.
Change to B, and continue to change color as in stripe sequence.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: P11, p3tog, p1, place marker (pm), p to end of row - 23 sts.
Row 4: Knit across, slipping marker as you come to it.
Row 5: K to 3 sts before marker, k3tog, remove marker, k1, pm, k to end of row - 21 sts.
Row 6: Knit across, slipping marker as you come to it.
Row 7: P to 3 sts before marker, p3tog, remove marker, p1, pm, p to end of row - 19 sts.
Rows 8-23: Rep Rows 4-7 four times.
Remove marker.
Row 24: Knit.
Row 25: K3tog - 1 st remains.
Do not fasten off.

Square 2
Stripe Sequence for Square 2: Work 1 row with A, (2 rows with C, 2 rows with A) twice, (2 rows with D, 2 rows with A) 4 times.
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts along top edge of previous Square (13 sts on needle), then cast on 13 sts - 26 sts.
Following Stripe Sequence for Square 2, rep Rows 1-25 of Square 1.
Do not fasten off.

Square 3
Stripe Sequence for Square 3: Work 1 row with A, (2 rows with D, 2 rows with A) 3 times, (2 rows with B, 2 rows with A) 3 times.
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts along top edge of previous Square (13 sts on needle), then cast on 13 sts - 26 sts.
Following Stripe Sequence for Square 3, rep Rows 1-25 of Square 1.
Do not fasten off.

Square 4
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts along top edge of previous Square (13 sts on needle), then cast on 13 sts - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 1. Do not fasten off.

Squares 5-12
Rep Squares 2-4 twice.
Rep Squares 2 and 3. Fasten off.

COLUMN 2
Square 13
With A, cast on 13 sts, with RS facing, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of first Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 2. Do not fasten off.

Square 14
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 3. Do not fasten off.

Square 15
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 1. Do not fasten off.

Square 16
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 2. Do not fasten off.

Squares 17-24
Rep Squares 14-16 twice, then rep Squares 14 and 15 once more. Fasten off.

COLUMN 3
Square 25
With A, cast on 13 sts, with RS facing, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of first Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 3. Do not fasten off.

Square 26
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 1. Do not fasten off.

Square 27
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 2. Do not fasten off.

Square 28
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.

Rep Squares 26-28 twice, then rep Squares 26 and 27 once more. Fasten off.

With A, cast on 13 sts, with RS facing, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of first Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 1. Do not fasten off.

Square 38
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 2. Do not fasten off.

Square 39
With RS facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts across top edge of previous Square, pick up and knit 13 sts across right side edge of next Square in previous column - 26 sts.
Work same as Square 3. Do not fasten off.

Square 40

FINISHING
Borders
Note: Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts.
Work back and forth in rows on circular needle, just as if working on straight needles.
With RS facing, circular needle and D, pick up and knit 119 sts evenly spaced across one short end of Blanket.
Top and Bottom Borders
Rows 1 and 3: Knit.
Row 2: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1 - 121 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1 - 123 sts.
Row 5: Knit.
Bind off. Work same border along opposite short end of Blanket.
Side Borders
With RS facing, circular needle and D, pick up and knit 158 sts evenly spaced across one long side of Blanket.
Rows 1 and 3: Knit.
Row 2: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1 - 160 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1 - 162 sts.
Row 5: Knit.
Bind off. Work same border across opposite long side of Blanket.
Seam corners of borders. Weave in ends.
