Crochet Striped Hat With Earflaps

Lion Brand« Jamie®

GAUGE:

18 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

hdc3tog (hdc 3 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) 3 times, yarn over and draw through all 7 loops on hook - 2 sts decreased.

NOTES:

1. Earflaps are worked first, back and forth in rows. Hat is worked in joined rnds, beg at top of Earflaps.
2. Color is changed every other row/rnd as in Stripe Pattern.
3. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st. Carry colors not in use up side of Earflap or inside of Hat. Take care to cover carried strands when working edging.

I changed the pattern a bit in the decreasing rows. I was getting a bump crocheting 3 together so chained 2 together with 6 HDc in between.
