GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Ridge st.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased. sk2p (slip 1 st-k2tog-pass slipped st over) A double decrease worked as follows: 1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle. 2. Knit the next 2 sts together. 3. With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts. PATTERN STITCH Ridge Stitch Rows 1-3: Knit. Row 4 (WS): Purl. Rep Rows 1-4 for Ridge st. STRIPE PATTERN Work 4 rows with A, 4 rows with B, 4 rows with C. Rep these 12 rows for Stripe pattern.

NOTES:

1.     Hat is worked back and forth in rows, in Ridge st and Stripe pattern, and then the seam is sewn.

2.     The Earflaps are worked first, then sts are cast-on between Earflaps for front of Hat.

 

 

RIGHT EARFLAP
With A, cast on 5 sts.
With A, work Rows 1 and 2 of Ridge st.
Shape Earflap
Row 1 (Increase row, RS): K1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1 - 7 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: Purl.
Change to B.
Row 3: Rep Row 1 - 9 sts.
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: Rep Row 1 - 11 sts.
Row 6: Purl.
Change to C.
Rows 7-10: Rep Rows 3-6 -15 sts.
Change to A.
From this point on, continue to work in Ridge st, changing color following Stripe pattern.
Row 11: Rep Row 1 - 17 sts.
Row 12: Knit.
Row 13 (Increase Row): K to last st, M1, k1 - 18 sts.
Row 14: Purl.
Rows 15-22: Rep Rows 11-14 twice - 24 sts.
Row 23: Rep Row 1 - 26 sts.
Rows 24 and 25: Knit.
Row 26: Purl.
Row 27 (Increase Row): K1, M1, knit to end - 27 sts.
Row 28: Knit.
Row 29: Rep Row 27- 28 sts.
Row 30: Purl.
Row 31: Rep Row 1 - 30 sts.
Row 32: Knit.
Sl sts to a stitch holder.

LEFT EARFLAP
With A, cast on 5 sts.
Work Rows 1 and 2 of Ridge st.
Shape Earflap
Rows 1-12: Rep Rows 1-12 of Right Earflap.
Row 13 (Increase Row): K1, M1, knit to end - 18 sts.
Row 14: Purl.
Rows 15-22: Rep Rows 11-14 twice - 24 sts.
Row 23: Rep Row 1 - 26 sts.
Rows 24 and 25: Knit.
Row 26: Purl.
Row 27 (Increase Row): K to last st, M1, k1 - 27 sts.
Row 28: Knit.
Row 29: Rep Row 27- 28 sts.
Row 30: Purl.
Row 31: Rep Row 1 - 30 sts.
Row 32: Knit.
Do NOT sl sts to a holder.

HAT
Notes:
1.    As you work the Hat, continue to work in Ridge st, changing color on every 4th row following Stripe pattern.  
2.    The next row should be a Row 3 of Ridge st, worked with C.

Joining Row (RS): With RS facing and working across Left Earflap, k1, M1, k28, M1, k1, cast on 14 sts for front of Hat; working across sts of Right Earflap, k1, M1, k28, M1, k1 - 78 sts.
Work 15 rows, keeping to Ridge st and Stripe pattern as established.

Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Decrease Row 1 (RS): K8, (sk2p, k12) 4 times, sk2p, k7 - 68 sts at the end of this row.
Work 3 rows.
Decrease Row 2: K7, (sk2p, k10) 4 times, sk2p, k6 - 58 sts.
Work 3 rows.
Decrease Row 3: K6, (sk2p, k8) 4 times, sk2p, k5 - 48 sts.
Work 3 rows.
Decrease Row 4: K5, (sk2p, k6) 4 times, sk2p, k4 - 38 sts.
Work 1 row.
Decrease Row 5: K4, (sk2p, k4) 4 times, sk2p, k3 - 28 sts.
Work 1 row.
Decrease Row 6: K3, (sk2p, k2) 4 times, sk2p, k2 - 18 sts.
Work 1 row.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Edging
Note: To pick up sts evenly, divide the edge of the Hat and Earflaps into sections as follows: first divide the edge in half. Mark the halfway point with a pin or scrap of yarn. Divide each of the halves in half again, marking these new points.
Now, simply pick up 29 sts between each of the markers.
With RS facing, join C at back edge of Right Earflap, pick up and k116 sts evenly spaced across edges of Earflaps and front of Hat.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 4 rows.
Bind off.

Fold bind-off row of Hat to inside and sew in place. Sew back seam.

Ties
With RS facing and B, pick up and k4 sts at lower edge of Earflap.
Work in Garter st for 29 rows.
Change to A and work in Garter st for 30 rows.
Change to C and work in Garter st for 30 rows.
Bind off.
Rep to work Tie on opposite Earflap.

Weave in ends.
