GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Work tightly to ensure that stuffing will not show through the sts.
2. Head and trunk are worked in one piece. First the Head is made, then the trunk is worked as at tube at the lower end of the Head.
3. Head/trunk, Ears and Legs are worked in continuous rnds. Do not join. St markers are placed to mark beg of rnds. Move markers up as you complete each rnd.

FRONT

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 28 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 2-20: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Note: In the next 7 rows, you will decrease one st at the beg and end of each row, to shape Elephant's back (top of pillow).
Rows 21-27: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog - 14 sts at the end of Row 27.

LEGS (make 4)
Ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in first ch.
Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - 12 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 3-5: Sc in each st around.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Assemble Body and add Tail

Hold Front and Back together with rows and sts matching. Working through both thicknesses, join yarn with sc at back of piece (where tail should be), sc evenly around entire outside edge to join Front to Back, stuffing body as you go. Join with slip st in first sc. Do not fasten off. Ch 8 for tail. Fasten off.
Sew Head to body, flattening back of Head and edge of body as you sew to ensure that Head is firmly attached. Fold Ears in half to form semi-circles and sew to Head. Sew Legs to lower edge of body. Weave in ends.

This is the cutest elephant pillow. I won an honorable mention at the California Orange County Fair for my elephant pillow.
