Diagonal Eyelet Cowl

GAUGE: 15 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Diagonal Lace pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: Yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.
PATTERN STITCH
Diagonal Lace Pattern (over an even number of sts)
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: K1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k1.

NOTES: 1. Cowl is worked back and forth in rows beg at longer lower edge.
2. Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
3. Hood portion of Cowl is shaped with short rows. Short rows are a way to add shaping to a piece without changing the st count by increasing or decreasing. When working short rows, only part of a row is knit before you turn the work. This gradually adds height to one section of the piece, while the height of the other sections does not change.
4. Stitch markers are used to keep track of the ends of the short rows.
5. The Diagonal Lace pattern will cause the piece to slant diagonally. The top of hood short row shaping is not worked at the exact center of the rows, to compensate for the slant.

COWL
Cast on 208 sts loosely.
Working back and forth on circular needle, as if working on straight needles, knit 4 rows.
Beg Short Row Shaping for Bottom of Hood
Next Row (RS): K1, (yo, k2tog) 42 times (85 sts on right needle), place marker (pm), (yo, k2tog) 20 times (40 sts after marker), leave rem sts unworked, turn - 125 sts on right needle, and 83 sts rem on left needle (before turning).
Next Row (WS): Pm (40 sts between markers), purl to next marker, remove marker, p2, turn.
Next Row (RS): Pm (42 sts between markers), *yo, k2tog; rep from * to next marker, remove marker, yo, k2tog, turn.
Next Row (WS): Pm (44 sts between markers), purl to next marker, remove marker, p2, turn.
Rep last 2 rows 8 times (76 sts between markers), adding 2 sts between markers on every row.
Main Section
Note: The main section is worked across all 208 sts.
Next Row (RS): Do not place marker, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to next marker, remove marker, **yo, k2tog; rep from ** to last st, k1.
Beg with Row 1, work in Diagonal Lace pattern for 34 rows.
Next Row (WS): Purl 47, pm, p76, pm, p85 - 76 sts between markers.
Beg Short Row Shaping for Top of Hood
Next Row (RS): K1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to 2nd marker (slip first marker as you come to it), remove 2nd marker, turn.
Next Row (WS): P2, pm (74 sts between markers), purl to next marker, remove marker, turn.
Next Row (RS): Yo, k2tog, pm (72 sts between markers), *yo, k2tog; rep from * to next marker, remove marker, turn.
Next Row (WS): P2, pm (70 sts between markers), purl to next marker, remove marker, turn.
Rep last 2 rows 8 more times.
Top Edge of Cowl
Note: Top edge of Cowl is worked across all 208 sts.
Next Row (RS): *Yo, k2tog; rep from * across to last st, removing markers as you come to them, knit last st.
Knit 4 rows.
Bind off all sts loosely as if to knit.
FINISHING
Dampen piece, flatten into shape and allow to dry. Seam ends, so that piece is a loop. Weave in ends. |

| I started making this with the eyelet pattern but decided I did not like it. I made the entire cowl in stockinette stitch - it was no longer 'diagonal', so I had to figure out the decreases for the top of the hood. It was easy to do and so much fun seeing the color changes!
