GAUGE:

11 hdc = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

PONCHO
Ch 63.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning ch does not count as a st) and in each ch across - 61 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 50 in. (127 cm) from beg. Fasten off.
Fold piece in half lengthwise, bringing first row to meet last row. The folded piece should measure about 22 x 25 in. (56 x 63.5 cm). Beg at a corner and following diagram, slip st side edges together for 13 in. (33 cm), leaving 12 in. (30.5 cm) open for neck. Do not cut yarn.

Cowl Neck
Rnd 1 (RS): Continuing with same strand of yarn, ch 2, work 66 hdc evenly spaced around neck opening; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch
Rep Rnd 2 until Cowl measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm).
Last Rnd: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Lower Edging

From RS, join yarn with sl st in any corner of lower edge, ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around lower edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

LOVE, LOVE LOVE THIS!!! Reviewed by Carol F on 2015-04-03 *****
You absolutely need 6 balls but I bought 7 and keeping original proportions, made mine 24" wide (foundation chain 66 sts, working with 64 sts) x 54" long. Made cowl a tad over 5" high (vs. 8") so I could tri-fold it in the back of neck so no smooshing of my short hair at hairline and the front of the cowl just flops itself into a really attractive look. Looks really cute on, but for comfort and snugglies, this is a wearable afghan, just what I wanted.

THE YARN: Okay, I detest acrylic generally but I am a total, complete, knock-me-down fan of this yarn. Upon weaving in last tail I ran the finished project through washer and dryer and ohhhh, sooooo soft, such great drape, soft, squishy goodness. It looks like an expensive wool (used pattern's colorway). Definitely making another one. Pattern extremely well written, I'm an inexperienced crocheter who learned how to do this on CrochetEverAfter's youtube video (15 min. long but takes you from foundation chain through hdc w/good camera work and sound and great instruction). Total newbie beginner could make this because that's about what I am. Mine, with added width/length, fits just a teense longer on "sleeve" areas but otherwise looks just like the pattern's. I do recommend mattress stitch on the shoulder seam instead of slipped stitch seaming (start from neck edge so your working yarn is at neck, ready for cowl). Love it!! Super practical, comfy and extremely attractive on.
