GAUGE:

10 hdc = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

PONCHO
Ch 57.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning ch does not count as a st) and in each ch across - 55 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st across. Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 50 in. (127 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.
Fold piece in half lengthwise, bringing first row to meet last row. The folded piece should measure about 22 x 25 in. (56 x 63.5 cm). Beg at a corner and following diagram, slip st side edges together for 13 in. (33 cm), leaving 12 in. (30.5 cm) open for neck. Do not cut yarn.

Cowl Neck
Rnd 1 (RS): Continuing with same strand of yarn, ch 2, work 60 hdc evenly spaced around neck opening; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rep Rnd 2 until cowl measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm).
Last Rnd: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Lower Edging

From RS, join yarn with sl st in any corner of lower edge, ch 1, work sc evenly spaced around lower edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

Cozy Cowl Neck Poncho Reviewed by Sharon Andrews on 2014-01-02 *****
I just finished this and it turned out beautiful. I didn't do a test swatch (I never do - bad me) and it turned out larger width-wise, so I decided to add more to the length. When I looked at it, I thought it would look terrible once I put it on. But it didn't! It really looked nice! I took it to work (I work at the front desk and get very cold - even when I have the heater on). Now I want to make another poncho…want to try another pattern…so am in search for something new to expand my horizons ( have had mostly knitted or crocheted scarves, and some hats. My resolution is to try new patterns and try to expand my knowledge in the use of yarn.
