Hooded Poncho

Lion Brand® Luxe Fur

7 sts + 13 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.

1. Poncho is worked in the rnd on a circular needle and on double pointed needles, from the lower edge to top of hood.
2. When changing from circular needle to double pointed needles (and vice versa) don't forget to transfer your end of rnd marker.
3. The hood is shaped with short rows. Short rows are rows that are worked over a portion of the sts in a row, leaving the remaining sts unworked. To work short rows, the pattern instructions will tell you to 'turn' before you reach the end of the row.
4. The edge of the hood will roll naturally to create an edging.

Lower Edging

With circular needle, cast on 104 sts loosely. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd.

Change to St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and knit 2 rnds.
Next Rnd: *K11, k2tog; rep from * around - 96 sts at the end of this rnd.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K10, k2tog; rep from * around - 88 sts at the end of this rnd.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd until piece measures 10 in. (25.5 cm) from beg.
Note: Change to double pointed needles as you work the next rnd.
Next Rnd: *K9, k2tog; rep from * around - 80 sts.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd until piece measures 13 in. (33 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd:*K2, k2tog; rep from * around - 60 sts.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd until piece measures 16 in. (40.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around - 40 sts.
Continue in St st worked in the rnd until piece 17 in. (43 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: *K8, k2tog; rep from * around - 36 sts.
Knit 1 rnd.

Beg Hood
Change back to circular needle as you work the next rnd.
Increase Rnd: *K2, M1; rep from * around - 54 sts at the end of this rnd.
Work even in St st worked in the rnd until hood measures 8 in. (20.5 cm).

Shape Back of Hood

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, p7, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, k8, turn.

Used Homespun instead. My daughter didn't like the way the hood turned out so I ripped it out. She liked it a lot as a turtleneck poncho though! As a novice it turned out well as a t-neck. Looking for another pattern to make a hooded poncho like my daughter wanted.
