Unisex Hoodie

GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.

NOTES:

1. Hoodie is worked in 5 pieces: Back, 2 Fronts and 2 Sleeves.
2. Back, Fronts, and Sleeves are each worked separately, beg at lower edge.
3. Sts for hood are picked up around neck edge after Hoodie is assembled.


BACK
With A, cast on 50 (54, 57, 60, 66) sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 6 rows.
Beg with a RS row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 8 (10, 12, 12, 14) rows.
Change to B and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Change to C and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Change to D and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Change to E and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Bind off.


LEFT FRONT
With D, cast on 25 (27, 29, 30, 33) sts.
Work in Garter st for 6 rows.
Beg with a RS row, work in St st for 8 (10, 12, 12, 24) rows.
Change to E and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Change to A and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Change to C and work in St st for 14 (16, 18, 18, 20) rows.
Change to B and work in St st for 3 (5, 7, 7, 9) rows.
Note: The last row you work will be a RS row.
Shape Neck
Row 1 (WS):
With B, bind off 4 sts, p to end of row – 21 (23, 25, 26, 29) sts at the end of this row.
Rows 2 and 4: Knit.
Row 3: Bind off 3 sts, p to end of row – 18 (20, 22, 23, 26) sts.
Row 5: Bind off 2 sts, p to end of row – 16 (18, 20, 21, 24) sts.
Row 6: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 15 (17, 19, 20, 23) sts.
Row 7: P1, p2tog, p to end of row – 14 (16, 18, 19, 22) sts.
Work in St st until piece measures same as Back.
Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT
Work same as Left Front until you have completed the 'C' stripe. Change to B and work in St st for 4(6, 8, 8, 10) rows.
Shape Neck
Row 1 (RS):
With B, bind off 4 sts, k to end of row – 21 (23, 25, 26, 29) sts.
Rows 2 and 4: Purl.
Row 3: Bind off 3 sts, k to end of row – 18 (20, 22, 23, 26) sts.
Row 5: Bind off 2 sts, k to end of row – 16 (18, 20, 21, 24) sts.
Row 6: P to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1 – 15 (17, 19, 20, 23) sts.
Row 7: K1, k2tog, k to end of row – 14 (16, 18, 19, 22) sts.
Work in St st until piece measures same as Back.
Bind off.


LEFT SLEEVE
Left Sleeve Color Sequence:
Work 6 rows with B, 4 rows with A, 4 rows with E, 4 rows with C, then change to D for the rem of the Sleeve.
With B, cast on 25 (30, 30, 34, 36) sts.
Work in Garter st for 6 rows.
Change to A and continue to change color as in Left Sleeve color sequence.
Beg with a RS row, work in St st for 4 rows.
Increase Row (RS): K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k1 – 27 (32, 32, 36, 38) sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 6 (1, 3, 1, 1) more time(s) – 39 (34, 38, 38, 40) sts when all increases have been completed.
Rep Increase Row – 41 (36, 40, 40, 42) sts.
Work in St st for 3 rows.
Rep Increase Row – 43 (38, 42, 42, 44) sts.
Rep last 4 rows 1 (6, 7, 7, 8) more times – 45 (50, 56, 56, 60) sts when all increases have been completed.
Work even in St st until piece measures 6 (7, 8, 9, 12) in. (15 (18, 20.
5, 23, 30.5) cm) from beg.
Bind off.

RIGHT SLEEVE
Right Sleeve Color Sequence:
Work 6 rows with D, 4 rows with A, 4 rows with E, 4 rows with C, then change to B for the rem of the Sleeve.
With D, cast on 25 (30, 30, 34, 36) sts.
Work in Garter st for 6 rows.
Change to A and continue to change color as in Right Sleeve color sequence.
Beg with a RS row, work in St st for 4 rows.
Increase Row (RS): K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k1 – 27 (32, 32, 36, 38) sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 6 (1, 3, 1, 1) more time(s) – 39 (34, 38, 38, 40) sts when all increases have been completed.
Rep Increase Row – 41 (36, 40, 40, 42) sts.
Work in St st for 3 rows.
Rep Increase Row – 43 (38, 42, 42, 44) sts.
Rep last 4 rows 1 (6, 7, 7, 8) more times – 45 (50, 56, 56, 60) sts when all increases have been completed.
Work even in St st until piece measures 6 (7, 8, 9, 12) in. (15 (18, 20.5, 23, 30.5) cm) from beg.
Bind off.


FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Measure and place markers 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2, 5 1/2, 6) in. (11.5 (12.5, 14, 14, 15) cm) down from shoulders on Front and Back. Sew tops of Sleeves between markers.
Sew side and Sleeve seams.
Note: For the hood and the front bands, you will be picking up sts along an edge of the Hoodie The st counts in the pattern are those used by the designer – you may find that you need to pick up a few more or a few less sts.

Hood
With RS facing, join A at Right Front neck edge, pick up and k18 sts evenly spaced across Right Front neck edge, pick up and k24 sts evenly spaced across Back neck edge, pick up and k18 sts evenly spaced across Left Front neck edge – 60 sts.
Work in St st for 15 rows.
Change to E and work in St st for 2 rows.
Change to B and work in St st for 2 rows.
Change to C and work in St st for 2 rows.
Change to A and work in St st for 20 (24, 24, 26, 30) rows.
Shape Top of Hood
Row 1 (RS):
K30, join a second ball of A, k30.
Work both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn.
Row 2: P across first side; on 2nd side, bind off 1 st, p to end of row.
Row 3: K across first side; on 2nd side, bind off 1 st, k to end of row – 29 sts on each side.
Rows 4–7: Rep last 2 rows 2 more times – 27 sts rem on each side.
Row 8: P across first side; on 2nd side, bind off 2 sts, p to end of row.
Row 9: K across first side; on 2nd side, bind off 2 sts, k to end of row – 25 sts on each side.
Row 10: P across first side; on 2nd side, bind off 3 sts, p to end of row.
Row 11: K across first side; on 2nd side, bind off 3 sts, k to end of row – 22 sts on each side.
Bind off.
Sew bound off edges to create top of hood.

Frontband
With RS facing, join D at lower edge of Right Front, pick up and k42 (46, 56, 56, 62) sts evenly spaced along Right Front edge, pick up and k34 (38, 38, 42, 44) sts across right Hood edge, pick up and k34 (38, 38, 42, 44) sts across left Hood edge, pick up and k42 (46, 56, 56, 62) sts evenly spaced along Left Front edge – 152 (168, 188, 196, 212) sts.
Place marker on one front edge for buttonhole. (Place the marker on the Right Front edge for a girl's Hoodie and on the Left Front edge of a boy's Hoodie.
) Knit 3 rows.
Buttonhole Row (RS): K to marker, k2tog, yarn over (for buttonhole), k to end of row.
Knit 3 more rows.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.
