Party Dress And Shrug

Lion Brand® Vanna's Glamour®

GAUGE:

24 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Zigzag pattern;
28 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Smocking pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch - 1 st decreased.
sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over)
A double decrease worked as follows:
1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle.
2. Knit the next 2 sts tog.
3. With tip of left needle, lift the slip st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle - you have decreased 2 sts.
Diagonal st
1. K3tog through back loops, but do not remove the 3 sts from the left hand needle.
2. Yarn over, then knit the same 3 sts tog through back loops again, and slip the sts from the left hand needle.

3. Shrug is worked in 2 halves.
4. Each Half of Shrug is worked in one piece to beg of neck. Piece is then divided and front and back are worked separately.

Oh, trust me to find a mistake. I was knitting along and I was saying to the family, something's not right with this. If I hadn't been recovering from surgery, I'd have caught it sooner, but the directions for the bodice say to make the bodice 11". After looking at the diagram, it seems it should be 1" before you start the armhole decrease. Only a goodball would have made the mistake and had to frog 10" of that diagonal pattern, but patterns have to written for idiots like me, too.
