GAUGE:

16 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows: 1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle. 2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle. 3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.   STRIPE PATTERN Work 2 rows with A, 2 rows with B, 2 rows with C. Rep these 6 rows for Stripe pattern.

NOTES:

1. Each Leg is worked back and forth in rows using 2 double pointed needles (dpns), and beg at lower edge. Legs are joined then Body is worked in rnds to underarm. Body is then divided, and front and back worked separately, back and forth in rows.
2. Legs and body are worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
3. Pocket is worked in Garter st (k every row).
4. When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.

FIRST LEG
Note: Cut a 1-2 yd. (1-2 m) length of C, roll into a ball and set aside for second ear.
With 2 dpn and C, cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 and all WS Rows: Purl.
Row 2: K1, (kfb) 3 times, k1 - 8 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: K1, (kfb) 6 times, k1 - 14 sts.
Row 6:K1, (kfb, k1) 6 times, k1 - 20 sts.

Beg Stripe Pattern
Work even in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and change color following Stripe pattern until piece measures 4 in. (10 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Cut yarn and sl sts to a holder.

SECOND LEG
Work same as First Leg. Do not sl sts to a holder.

BODY
Continue to change color following Stripe pattern.
Joining Rnd (RS): K20 sts of Second Leg, cast on 3 sts, k20 sts of First Leg, cast on 3 sts - 46 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles, placing 15 sts on first needle, 15 sts on 2nd needle, and 16 sts on 3rd needle. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle.
Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg. Cut yarn. Sl last 13 sts and first 10 sts to a holder for back.

Front
With RS facing, join yarn to rem 23 sts for front. Work back and forth in rows with 2 dpn, and continuing to change color following Stripe pattern.
Next Row (RS): Cast on 8 sts for arm, k to end of row - 31 sts.
Next Row: Cast on 8 sts for arm, p to end of row - 39 sts.
Work even in St st for 12 rows. Note:The last row you work should be a WS row.

Shape Head
Continue to change color following Stripe pattern.
Next Row (RS): Bind off 15 sts, k to end of row - 24 sts.
Next Row: Bind off 15 sts, p to end of row - 9 sts.
Increase Row: K1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 - 11 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 4 more times - 19 sts when all increases have been completed.
Work even in St st for 12 rows. Note:The last row you work should be a WS row.

Shape Ears
Change to C and work ears using C only.
Next Row (RS): K7 for first ear, join a 2nd ball of C and bind off 5 sts for top of head, k to end of row for 2nd ear - 7 sts rem for each ear.
Work both ears at the same time using separate balls of yarn.
Next Row (WS): Purl across all sts of first ear, then purl across all sts of 2nd ear.
Decrease Row (RS): K to last 3 sts of first ear, k2tog, k1; on 2nd ear, k1, ssk, k to end of row - 6 sts for each ear.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times - 3 sts for each ear.
Bind off.

Back
Slip 23 sts for back onto needle.
Work back same as front.

POCKET
With 2 dpn and E, cast on 5 sts.
Increase Row (RS): K1, kfb, k to end of row - 6 sts.
Next Row (WS): Knit.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times - 9 sts when all increases have been completed.
Work even in Garter st (k every row) for 4 rows.
Decrease Row (RS): K1, k2tog, k to end of row - 8 sts.
Next Row (WS): Knit.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times - 5 sts when all decreases have been completed.
Bind off.

EYES (make 2)
With 2 dpn and E, cast on 2 sts. Knit the 2 sts. Do not turn work. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * for a total of 4 rows.
Bind off.

NOSE
With D, work same as Eyes for a total of 9 rows.
Bind off.

MUZZLE (make 2)
With D, work same as Eyes for a total of 11 rows.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew leg, side and top of head seams, stuffing with fiberfill before sewing closed.
With long straight edge at top, sew sides and bottom of Pocket to center of Body. Sew Eyes to head. Fold Nose into a heart shape and sew between Eyes. Sew one Muzzle to each side of Nose.
Weave in ends.
