Bright Spots Baby Cardigan

GAUGE: 22 sts + 29 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: 1. Cardigan is knit in one piece, beg at lower edge of back. At underarm sts are cast on for sleeves. Work then continues to back neck, where piece is divided for fronts and worked down to lower edge of fronts.
2. Cardigan is worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with Garter st (k every row) edging.

CARDIGAN
Back
Beg at lower edge of back, cast on 55 (57, 63, 69) sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 9 rows.
Change to St st (k on RS, p on WS) and work until piece measures 4 3/4 (5 1/4, 6, 7) in. (12 (13.5, 15, 18) cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row.
Shape Sleeves
Next Row (RS): Cast on 25 (27, 33, 39) sts (for right sleeve), k to end of row - 80 (84, 96, 108) sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Cast on 25 (27, 33, 39) sts (for left sleeve), k5, p to last 5 sts, k5 (for right cuff) - 105 (111, 129, 147) sts at the end of this row.

Rep last 2 rows, keeping first and last 5 sts in Garter st and rem sts in St st until piece measures about 2 1/4 (2 3/4, 3 1/4, 3 3/4) in. (5.5 (7, 8.5, 9.5) cm) from sleeve cast-on, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): K5, p31 (32, 40, 48), k33 (37, 39, 41) for back neck edging, p to last 5 sts, k5.

Shape Neck
Next Row (WS): K5, p31 (32, 40, 48), k3 and sl these 39 (40, 48, 56) sts to a st holder for left front, bind off 27 (31, 33, 35) sts for neck (one st rem on left needle), k2, p to last 5 sts, k5 - 39 (40, 48, 56) sts rem on needles for right front.

Continue on 39 (40, 48, 56) sts for right front only.

Shape Right Front Neck
Next Row (WS): Cast on 16 (19, 19, 20) sts for right front neck, k19 (22, 22, 23) for front neck edging, p to last 5 sts, k5 - 55 (59, 67, 76) sts at the end of this row.

Next Row: K19 (22, 22, 23), p to last 5 sts, k5.

Place marker (pm) on this row to indicate placement for first button.

Shape Left Front Neck
Next Row (RS): Cast on 16 (19, 19, 20) sts for left front neck, k to end of row - 55 (59, 67, 76) sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: K5, p31 (32, 40, 48), k to end of row.
Next Row: Knit.
Rep last 2 rows once.
Next Row: K5, p31 (32, 40, 48), k to end of row.
Next (Buttonhole) Row: K1, k2tog, yo, k to end of row.
Next Row: K5, p to last 5 sts, k to end of row, knitting into the yo to make buttonhole.
Continue on the left front, keeping the first and last 5 sts in Garter st, the rem sts in St st, and continuing to work the buttonhole row to match the placement of button markers.
Work until sleeve measures 7 (8, 9, 10) in. (18 (20.5, 23, 25.5) cm) from sleeve cast-on, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): Bind off 25 (27, 33, 39) sts for sleeve - 30 (32, 34, 37) sts rem for left front.
Keeping 5 sts of buttonhole band in Garter st and rem sts in St st, AND continuing to work buttonholes to match markers, work until left front measures same as back to Garter st at lower edge, end with a RS row.
You now have 4 buttonholes completed.
Knit 4 rows.
Next (Buttonhole) Row: K1, k2tog, yo, k to end.
Next Row: Knit, knitting into the yo to make the final buttonhole.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Neck Edging
From RS, beg at right front corner of neck, pick up and k67 (77, 79, 83) sts evenly spaced along neck edge. Without knitting any sts, bind off.
Fold Cardigan across shoulders. Sew sleeve and side seams.
Sew buttons to buttonband opposite buttonholes.

I find the stitches stretch out to much especially if you have to go back and repeat one.
The cuffs stretched out to much.
