19 sts + 28 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Seed St (multiple of 2 sts)
Row 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: P the knit sts, and k the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

1. Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
2. Blanket is worked in one piece in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with Seed st borders.
3. Markers are used to separate the border sts from the center St st section. After placement, slip markers as you come to them.

Cast on 114 sts.
Lower Border
Work in Seed st for 6 rows.
Next Row (RS): Work in Seed st over first 5 sts for side border, place marker (pm), knit to last 5 sts, pm, work last 5 sts in Seed st for side border.
Keeping the first and last 5 border sts in Seed st and the remaining sts in St st (k on RS, p on WS) work until piece measures about 21 in. (53.5 cm) from beginning.
Top Border
Work in Seed st for 6 rows.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

Squishy Soft Baby Blanket Reviewed by MARY SOLIS on 2014-04-15 *****
I'm knitting this blanket in the seed and stockinette stitches and it is coming out just wonderfully! I'm used a chenille multi-color baby weight yarn and you don't really see the border or top/bottom see stitches as prominently I would have liked. So I would recommend a less busy yarn. Any way, I'm knitting this as a cover for my kitties' favorite ottoman. Very enjoyable project :) Thank you LB!
