16 double crochet = about 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Chain 24.
Row 1: Double crochet in 4th chain from hook and in each chain across.
Row 2: Chain 3, turn, double crochet in each stitch across.
Repeat last row until almost all yarn has been used. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Double-Crochet One-Ball Scarf Reviewed by Janice Eagan on 2012-08-04 ****
I worked this up in Woodlands with a 6mm hook for an elderly gentlemen. Tweed Stripes is a wonderful yarn and this 1 ball scarf worked up in about 1hr and 1/2. The first time I worked it up it was much too short so I ripped it out and chained 18 to add a bit of length. 18chs with a J hook made me a 5" wide by 44" long scarf. I do have a bit of a tight crochet so the length might be all me. The 44" length will be great for my elderly friend but If I was to make this scarf for myself I think I'd go with 20chs and use 2 balls for a super long scarf.
