GAUGE: 8 sts + 8 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: | kfb (knit into front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st -1 st increased. |
NOTES: 1. Hat is worked back and forth in rows, beg at top of Hat. Scarf is worked along a portion of the Hat sts.
2. One color is used per row. Colors are changed every 2 rows. Sts are slipped with yarn in front (wyif) or with yarn in back (wyib) of work as instructed. With yarn in front or in back of work refers to the work as it faces you.
3. Unless otherwise instructed, do not cut yarns when changing color, simply carry the unused colors along the edge of the piece, twisting working yarn around unused colors to secure the strands.

Hat
With A, cast on 8 sts.
Row 1 and All WS Rows: Purl.
Row 2 (RS): K1, kfb in each of next 6 sts, k1 - 14 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: K1, *kfb, k1; rep from * to last st, k1 - 20 sts.
Row 6: K1, *kfb, k2; rep from * to last st, k1 - 26 sts.
Row 8: K1, *kfb, k3; rep from * to last st, k1 - 32 sts.
Row 10: K1, *kfb, k4; rep from * to last st, k1 - 38 sts.
Row 12: K1, *kfb, k5; rep from * to last st, k1 - 44 sts.
Beg Colorwork
Row 14: With B, *k1, sl 1 wyib; rep from * across.
Row 15: *Sl 1 wyif, p1; rep from * across.
Rows 16 and 17: Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Rows 18-21: With C, rep Rows 14-17.
Rows 20-23: With A, rep Rows 14-17.
Rows 24-26: With B, rep Rows 14-16.
Row 27 (WS): With B, bind off 6 sts, p8, sl these 8 sts + the st rem from the bind off (9 sts total) to a holder, bind off next 14 sts, p8 sts, bind off rem 6 sts - 9 sts rem on needle. Cut all yarns.
First Half of Scarf
With RS facing, join C to sts on needle.
Row 1: With C, *k1, sl 1 wyib; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: P1, *sl 1 wyif, p1; rep from * across.
Rows 3 and 4: Work in St st.
Rows 5-8: With A, rep Rows 1-4.
Rows 9-12: With B, rep Rows 1-4.
Rep Rows 1-12 until scarf measures about 30 in. (76 cm).
Bind off.
Second Half of Scarf
Sl 9 sts from holder back to needle. With RS facing, join C to sts and work as for first half of scarf.
FINISHING
Sew Hat seam. Weave in ends. |
