4 pattern reps = about 5 in. (12.5 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Puff Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st and draw up a loop, (yarn over, insert hook in same st and draw up a loop) 2 times - 7 loops on hook. Yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop - 3 loops on hook. Yarn over, draw through all loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

1. Hat Band is worked back and forth in rows, then last row is joined to first row to form a ring. Sts for Hat are worked across one long side of the Hat Band.
2. Hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join and do not turn at end of rounds.

Ch 4.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning counts as first hdc) and in next ch - 3 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), turn, hdc in each st across, hdc in top of beginning ch.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 16 in. (40.5 cm) from beginning.
Hold first and last rows together, with sts matching.
Joining Row: Ch 1, turn. Working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st across to join Hat Band into a ring. Do not fasten off.

Rnd 1:
Ch 1, working in ends of rows across one long side of Hat Band, work 32 sc evenly spaced around; join with sl st in the first st.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; join with sl st in first st - 64 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc in this row and in all following rows) Puff in next st, *dc in next st, Puff in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch - 32 Puffs at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first st - 64 sc.
Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3.
Rnds 6-9: Rep Rnds 4 and 5.
Rnd 10: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first st - 48 sts.
Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 3 - 24 Puffs.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, *sc in next st, sc2tog; rep from * around; join with sl st in first st - 32 sts.
Rnd 13: Rep Rnd 3 - 16 Puffs.
Rnd 14: Ch 3, dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch - 32 dc.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, (sc2tog) around; join with sl st in first st - 16 sts.
Rnd 16: Ch 3, dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through sts of last rnd and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Galaxy Hat Reviewed by Kathy Alsabrook on 2014-02-14 *****
Just finished making this and love it!! Never been a big fan of the traditional "beanie" style hat for winter and this is just the ticket! Easy pattern-although the "puff"stitch sometimes was a bit tight, probably just me. Now my daughter wants one too!!! Going to be making quite a few of these!!!
