9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

1. Hat is worked with 1 strand each of A and B held tog.
2. Hat is worked in continuous rnds from lower edge up to crown (top of Hat). Do not join rnds and do not turn at beg of rnds.
3. If you find it difficult to join the beg ch into a ring without twisting the ch, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row, then joined into a rnd, as follows: Leaving a long beg tail, ch 41, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; join with sl st in first sc - 40 sc at the end of this rnd. Use beg tail to sew gap at base of first row closed. Place marker for beg of rnd. Proceed to Rnd 2.

With 1 strand each of A and B held tog, ch 40. Taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; do not join, work in continuous rnds - 40 sc at the end of this rnd. Place marker for beg of rnd. Move marker up as work progresses.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.
Rep last rnd until piece measures about 4 in. (10 cm) from beg.

Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Rnd 1:
*Sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 35 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 2-4: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 5: *Sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 30 sts.
Rnd 6: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 7: *Sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 25 sts.
Rnd 8: *Sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 20 sts.
Rnds 9-11: Rep Rnd 6.
Rnd 12: *Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 15 sts.
Rnd 13: Rep Rnd 6.
Rnd 14: *Sc in next sc, sc2tog; rep from * around - 10 sts.
Rnds 15-17: Rep Rnd 6.
Rnd 18: *Sc2tog; rep from * around - 5 sts.
Rnd 19: Rep Rnd 6.
Fasten off. Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather.Knot securely.

Weave in ends.

Little Dipper Hat Reviewed by Connie Mitchell on 2012-02-27 *****
With 2 balls of Vanna's Colors and 1 ball of Vanna's Glamour, I was able to work up two hats. I used Vanna's Colors Marina and Vanna's Glamour Lapis and it turned out better than I expected. I'll make many more for friends and possibly a craft show.
