1 ripple = about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.
NOTES:
1. This project is worked in a ripple crochet pattern. The ripple pattern is easy to do, but it's important to remember that you may need to work several rows before the ripple pattern becomes clear.
2. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete st. Fasten off old color.
3. When changing color on Hat, leave long yarn tails to use for seaming; when changing color on Scarf, work over yarn tail of old color to avoid having multiple ends to weave in.
HAT
Note: Hat is worked back and forth in rows and then seamed. Stripe Sequence for Hat
*Work 2 rows with A, 1 row with C, 1 row with A, 2 rows with C, 1 row with D, 1 row with C, 2 rows with D, 1 row with E, 2 rows with F, 2 rows with B, 1 row with C, 2 rows with E, 1 row with C, 1 row with G, 1 row with C, 2 rows with B.
Rep from * for Stripe Sequence for Hat.
With A, ch 81. Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, *(sc2tog) twice, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in each of next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch; rep from * across to last 7 ch, (sc2tog) twice, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in last ch - 8 ripples at the end of this row. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Note: When Hat has been seamed, it will be a tube, open at both ends. Our instructions are to use Row 1 to make the top of the Hat, but if you prefer, you can gather the last row you worked.
Using yarn tails, seam Hat.
Thread a length of A through Row 1 of Hat, and pull to gather for top of Hat. Knot securely.
Weave in ends.

Iconic Ripple Hat And Scarf Reviewed by Diane Suder on 2013-05-13
Love new patterns.
The hat was fun to make and some child will hopefully be thrilled to receive it.
My next project will be with baby yarn. It will make a great blanket for a special preemie in the NICU.
It makes up quickly. Having fun using my leftover Caron yarn.
