GAUGE: 17 sts + 33 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased. |
NOTES: 1. The Afghan is worked in one piece, beginning with a Center Square. 2. Sts are picked up across each of the 4 side edges of Center Square, and triangular corners are worked, creating a larger square. The process of picking up sts to create a new set of corners is repeated for a total of 4 times. 3. Sts for the border are picked up across each side of the Afghan. Border sts are increased at beg of rows to shape the corners. 4. To make picking up sts evenly a little easier, divide the edge that you will pick up across into equal sections. For example, to pick up 40 sts evenly across an edge, divide the edge into 4 sections. Use pins, binder clips, or scraps of contrast color yarn to mark the sections. Then just pick up and k 10 sts across each of the 4 sections.

AFGHAN Center Square With A, cast on 40 sts. Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 9 1/2 in. (24 cm) from beg. Bind off.
First Corner Note: Garter st is a reversible st, just choose one side as the RS. After you choose which side is the RS, continue to use this side for RS. You may wish to place a marker to indicate the RS. With RS facing and B, pick up and k40 sts evenly spaced across one side edge of Center Square. Decrease Row: With B, K2tog, k to end of row - 39 sts at the end of this row. With B, rep Decrease Row 5 more times. Continue to rep Decrease Row, working 6 rows each with B and A alternately, until 1 st rem. Fasten off. Rep First Corner across each of rem 3 side edges of Center Square to make a Larger Center Square.
Second Corner With RS facing and A, pick up and k60 sts evenly spaced across one side edge of Larger Center Square. Decrease Row: With A, K2tog, k to end of row - 59 sts at the end of this row. With A, rep Decrease Row 5 more times. Continue to rep Decrease Row, working 6 rows each with A and B alternately, until 1 st rem. Fasten off. Rep Second Corner across each of rem 3 side edges of Larger Center Square to make a Larger Center Square.
