GAUGE: 1 Octagon = 5 in. (12.5 cm) across. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: 1. Afghan is made from 99 Octagons and 116 Squares.
2. The Octagons and Squares are worked separately, then sewn together following the Assembly Diagram.
3. An edging is worked around the outside edge of the Afghan.

OCTAGONS (make 99 - 22 with A, 15 with B, 9 each with C, D, E, F, and G, 4 with H, 8 with I, and 5 with K)
Ch 3, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Work 8 sc in ring; join with sl st in first sc - 8 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2 in this rnd and in all following rnds), *3 dc in next sc, ch 2; rep from * around, 2 dc in first st (at base of beg ch-5); join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch - 24 dc and 8 ch-2 sps at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: (Sl st, ch 5, dc) in first ch-sp, *dc in next 3 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * to last 3 dc, dc in last 3 dc; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch - 40 dc (5 dc on each side) and 8 ch-2 sps at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 4: (Sl st, ch 5, dc) in first ch-2 sp, *dc in each dc to next ch-2 sp, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * 6 more times, dc in each dc to end of rnd; join sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch - 56 dc (7 dc on each side) and 8 ch-2 sps at the end of this rnd. Fasten off.
SQUARES (make 116 - 30 with H, 28 with J, 20 each with E and L, 10 with K, and 8 with G)
Ch 9.
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (beg ch counts as dc) and in each ch across - 7 dc at the end of this row.
Rows 2 and 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, dc in each dc across, dc in top of beg ch.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Arrange Octagons and Squares as shown in Assembly Diagram and sew or crochet together.
Edging
With RS facing, join I with sl st anywhere along outside edge of Afghan. Work sc evenly spaced around outside edge of Afghan; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
