Knitted Lion

Lion Brand® Martha Stewart CraftsTM/MC Roving Wool - Martha Stewart CraftsTM/MC Glitter Eyelash

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
M1R (make 1 - right slanting) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles from back to front and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the front loop - 1 st increased.
M1L (make 1 - left slanting) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles from front to back and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Lion Body is worked in the rnd, beg at top of head.
2. Arms, Ears and Mane are worked separately and sewn to Lion. Arms and Ears are worked in the rnd, Mane is worked back and forth in rows.
3. Markers are placed on Rnd 8 to indicate where sts will be increased and decreased for face shaping.
4. When knitting in the round on double pointed needles (dpn), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 4 dpn, your sts should be divided among 3 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using - this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical 'tube' of knitting.

LION
Head

With A, cast on 12 sts.> Divide sts onto 3 double pointed needles (dpns), with 4 sts on each of the 3 dpns. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle, being careful not to twist sts.

MANE
NOTES

1. Mane is worked back and forth in rows on 2 dpns.

FINISHING
Finish stuffing Body as needed through opening between legs, then sew opening closed. Stuff Arms. Sew top of Arms closed, then sew to Body. Flatten Ears and fold side edges to center. Sew Ears to sides of head.
With yarn tail, sew cast-on and bound-off ends of Mane together, then sew Mane around head.
Tail
Cut 3 strands of A about 18 in. (45.5 cm) long. Hold strands together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through back end of Lion, forming a loop. Pull ends of strands through this loop. Pull to tighten. Divide into 3 groups of 2 strands each. Braid for about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm). Knot ends. Trim.
Cut one strand of B about 8 in. (20.5 cm) long. Wrap strand around knotted end of Tail 5 times. Knot ends. Trim.
From felt, cut 3 small circles for eyes and nose. With sewing needle and thread, sew felt circles securely to face.
Weave in ends.
