Tasseled Shawl
Lion Brand® Tweed Stripes®
GAUGE: 14 sts + 21 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st. |
NOTES: 1. Shawl begins and ends with a narrow (3 st) length of St st. In the first half of the Shawl, sts are increased, in the second half sts are decreased.
2. Tassels are sewn onto Shawl.

SHAWL
First Half
Cast on 3 sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Row 1: K1, kfb in next st, k to end of row - 4 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: Purl.
Rows 3-6: Rep Rows 1 and 2 two more times - 6 sts when all increases are completed.
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: Purl.
Rep Rows 1-8 until you have 45 sts on your needles, then rep Rows 1 and 2 until you have 90 sts on your needles. End with a WS row.

Row 2: Purl.

Next Row: Purl.
Next 6 Rows: Rep Rows 1 and 2 three times - 42 sts rem.

FINISHING
Tassels (make 3)
Wrap yarn around 4 in. (10 cm) piece of cardboard 40 times. Cut a piece of yarn 10 in. (15 cm) long and thread doubled into large-eyed blunt needle. Insert needle under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely near strands. Cut yarn loops at lower edge of cardboard. Cut a piece of yarn 60 in. (152.5 cm) long and wrap tightly around loops 1/2 in. (1 cm) below top knot to form Tassel neck. Knot securely and wrap two strands together around the tassel until wraps measure 1 1/2 in. (4 cm) wide; thread ends into needle and weave ends to center of Tassel. Trim Tassel ends evenly.
Sew a Tassel to each point of Shawl.
Weave in ends. |
