GAUGE:

17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.

PATTERN STITCH
Seed Stitch (over an odd number of sts)
Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

NOTES:

1. Back, Fronts, and Sleeves are worked back and forth in rows on circular needle to armhole. The pieces are then joined and the yoke (upper portion of Cardi) is worked in one piece.
2. A circular needle is used to accommodate large number of stitches.
3. Please read through the following terms before beginning:
'as established' means to continue in the current pattern st. For example, to continue in Seed st, k the purl sts and p the knit sts.
'work even' means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
'Rep 0 more times' means that for a specific size you will NOT rep the instructions.

BACK
Cast on 77 (85, 93, 101, 109) sts.
Work 10 rows in Seed st.
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 14 1/2 in. (37 cm) from beg, end with a WS (purl) row.
Shape Armhole
Next Row (RS): Bind off 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, k to end of row - 74 (81, 88, 95, 102) sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Bind off 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, p to end of row - 71 (77, 83, 89, 95) sts at the end of this row.
Place sts on a holder.

LEFT FRONT
Cast on 43 (47, 51, 55, 59) sts.
Work 10 rows in Seed st.
Next Row (RS): K to last 7 sts, place marker (pm), work last 7 sts in Seed st as established for front band.
Note: The marker defines the 7 sts for front band.
Next Row: Work in Seed st to marker, slip marker (sm), p to end of row.
Keeping 7 sts in Seed st for front band and rem sts in St st, work until piece measures same as Back to armhole, end with a WS row.
Shape Armhole
Next Row (RS): Bind off 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, k to end of row - 40 (43, 46, 49, 52) sts at the end of this row.

Place sts on a holder.

RIGHT FRONT
Cast on 43 (47, 51, 55, 59) sts.
Work 10 rows in Seed st.
Next Row (RS): Work first 7 sts in Seed st as established for front band, pm, k to end of row.
Next Row: P to marker, sm, work last 7 sts in Seed st.
Keeping 7 sts in Seed st for front buttonhole band and rem sts in St st, work until piece measures same as Back to armhole, end with a RS row.
Shape Armhole
Next Row (WS): Bind off 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, p to end of row - 40 (43, 46, 49, 52) sts at the end of this row.
Place sts on a holder and set aside.

SLEEVE (make 2)
Cast on 39 (41, 43, 45, 47) sts.
Work 10 rows in Seed st.
Beg with a RS row, work in St st for 2 rows.
Increase Row (RS):K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k1 - 41 (43, 45, 47, 49) sts at the end of this row.

YOKE (upper portion of the Cardi)
With RS facing, place sts from holders back onto needle in the following order: Right Front, Sleeve, Back, Sleeve, Left Front - 249 (265, 281, 297, 313) sts.
Next Row (RS): Join yarn and work in Seed st as established over first 7 sts, *k37 (124, 31, 69, 28), k2tog; rep from * 4 (0, 6, 2, 8) more times, k to last 7 sts, work in Seed st as established over last 7 sts - 244 (264, 274, 294, 304) sts. Note: The '0' for size M means that you work the instructions once, you do not rep them.
Keeping 7 sts for front bands in Seed st and rem sts in St st, work even for 3 (5, 7, 5, 7) rows.

Eyelet Yoke
Note: In the pattern for the eyelet yoke, Row 1 is worked as both a RS and a WS row.
Row 1 (RS): Work in Seed st as established over first 7 sts, k to last 7 sts, work in Seed st as established over last 7 sts.
Row 2: Rep Row 1.
Row 3 (Eyelet Row): Work in Seed st as established over first 7 sts, *k2tog, yo; rep from * to last 7 sts, work in Seed st as established over last 7 sts.
Row 4: Rep Row 1.

Think I will enjoy wearing this cardigan. I used acrylic, so perhaps it doesn't lay quite as nice as a blend. I also added an extra eyelet sequence since others mentioned a short yoke. (Mine is a size medium and I added the rows 11-16 for sizes 1x-2x for the extra, but it makes the whole sweater longer 23" instead of 22".)
