9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

Hat is worked back and forth in rows. Side edges are seamed to make Hat.

Cast on 40 sts.
Row 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of row.
Rep Row 1 until piece measures about 6 in. (15 cm) from beg.
Next Row (RS): (K19, kfb) 2 times - 42 sts at the end of this row.
Continue in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 9 in. (23 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Next Row (RS):
*K5, k2tog; rep from * to end of row - 36 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: *K4, k2tog, rep from * to end of row - 30 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: *K3, k2tog, rep from * to end of row - 24 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: *K2, k2tog, rep from * to end of row - 18 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: *K1, k2tog, rep from * to end of row - 12 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: (K2tog) 6 times - 6 sts at the end of this row.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.

Cast on 18 sts.
Row 1: K2, *p2, k2; rep from * across.
Row 2: P2, *k2, p2; rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until Scarf measures about 60 in. (152.5 cm) from beg.
Bind off.

Seam side edges of Hat. Following package directions, make a large pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to top of Hat. Weave in ends.

Hat And Scarf Set Reviewed by Roni Mayes on 2014-12-01 *****
Easy to read and follow instructions for beginners. I have gotten so good at the hats that I can make 1 hat a day. However, I would recommend starting out with circular needles size 13 and once you begin to k2tog transfer them to regular needles size 13. It seemed much easier that way for me. If I can edit this later I will upload a pic of the hat.
