GAUGE: 11 sts = 4 in. (10cm) over St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: Hat is worked with 1 strand each of A and B held tog.

HAT
With circular needle and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 54 sts. Place marker for beginning of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Purl 7 rnds.
Knit 7 rnds.
Purl 7 rnds.
Knit 1 rnd.
Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Note: When sts have been sufficiently decreased, change to double pointed needles.
Next Rnd: *K2tog, k7; rep from * to end of rnd - 48 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K2tog, k2; rep from * to end of rnd - 36 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 18 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 9 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
Earflaps
From RS, pick up and k14 sts anywhere along cast-on edge.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 7 rows.
Decrease Row (RS): P2tog, p to last 2 sts, p2tog - 12 sts at the end of this row.
Work in Rev St st (p on RS, k on WS) for 6 rows.
Work in St st for 7 rows.
Work in Rev St st for 7 rows.
Next Row (WS): Purl.
Next Row: (K2tog, k3) twice, k2tog-9 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: (K2tog) twice, k1, (k2tog) twice - 5 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K2tog, k1, k2tog - 3 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: P3tog - 1 st remains.
Cut yarn, leaving a 14 in. (35.5 cm) tail. Draw tail through last st to fasten off. Do not cut. Cut a 28 in. (71 cm) length each of A and B. Pull length through tip of earflap. Divide strands and remaining tail into 3 groups of one A and one B strand each. Braid the 3 groups for 8 in. (20.5 cm). Knot the end and trim. Measure 7 in. (18 cm) from one side of earflap (front of hat) then pick up and knit 14 sts along cast-on edge and work 2nd earflap in same way.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
