Crocheted Cone Hat

Lion Brand® Martha Stewart CraftsTM/MC Alpaca Blend

GAUGE:

10 sc + 11 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in rnds, with RS always facing. At the end of each rnd, join last st to first st with a sl st. Do not turn at beg of each rnd.
2. If you prefer, Rnd 1 can be worked as a row and then joined into a rnd. This is an easy way to beg if you're concerned about twisting the foundation ch.
3. To work Rnd 1 as a row, leave a yarn tail and ch 43 (47), sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. At the end of the row, join the last st to the first with a sl st. Use the yarn tail to close up the small opening left by working a row.

HAT
Ch 42 (46). Taking care not to twist ch; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Sc in in each ch around; join with sl st in first sc - 42 (46) sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rep Rnd 2 until piece measures 4 (4 1/2) in. (10 (11.5) cm) from beg.
Shape Top
Size 3-5 years ONLY
Note:
If you are making size 2-3 years, do not work the next rnd, go directly to the first rnd in Both Sizes section.
Next Rnd: Ch 1, (sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog) 4 times, sc in last 2 sts; join with sl st in first sc - 42 sts at the end of this rnd.

I agree that the sizing is a little off. I don't have a size hook recommended and wanted a 0-3 month hat, so I used an J hook but followed directions for the 3-5 year hat and it turned out almost perfectly sized for what I wanted. (I'm pretty confident in my gauge) that all being said, the shape turned out so cute and just like the picture. I know my sister will love it for her little Olive :)
