GAUGE:

11 dc = 4 in. (10 cm)

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

FIRST STRIP
With A, ch 96 (foundation ch made).
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (beg ch counts as dc) and in each ch across - 94 dc at the end of this row.
Rows 2-4: Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this row and in all following rows), turn, dc in each st across.
Row 5: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 3 sts, *ch 2, sk next 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts; rep from * across - 15 ch-2 sps at the end of this row.
Row 6: Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc and ch across - 94 dc at the end of this row.
Rows 7-9: Ch 3, turn, dc in each st across.
Fasten off.

Note: The Second-Seventh Strips are worked the same as the First Strip through Row 9. When you finish working Row 9 of the Second-Seventh Strips, you will join each to the previous strip by working a Joining Row.

SECOND STRIP
With B, ch 96.
Rows 1-9: Work same as Rows 1-9 of First Strip.
At the end of Row 9, do not fasten off.
Note:The Joining Row (instructions below) will form a zigzag between two strips, joining them together. You will be joining the 94 sts on the last row worked to the foundation ch of the previous strip.

With RS facing, place First Strip above Second Strip.
Next (Joining) Row: Sl st in first st of Second Strip, ch 1, sl st in first foundation ch of First Strip, ch 2, sk next st of Second Strip, sl st in next st of Second Strip, ch 2, sk next 2 sts of First Strip, sl st in next st of First Strip, *ch 2, sk next 2 sts of Second Strip, sl st in next st of Second Strip, ch 2, sk next 2 sts of First Strip, sl st in next st of First Strip; rep from * across to last st of Second Strip, ch 1, sl st in last st of Second Strip.
Fasten off.

THIRD-SEVENTH STRIPS
With C, D, E, F and G, work as for Second Strip, working Joining Row at the end of Row 9 to join current Strip to previous Strip.

FINISHING
Edging

With RS facing, join C with sl st in any corner of Throw. Work sc evenly spaced around outside edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Great Pattern - Rainbow Panels Baby Throw Reviewed by jennie.kerr on 2013-09-18 *****
I have used this pattern so many times for baby afghans. It's very easy, makes up quickly, and is a good sized blanket. I have never done the rainbow panels, but use it a lot for sport team baby blankets. (I alternate the two basic colors as the panels, and then an accent color for the connectors. For instance, a recent Chicago Bears blanket had navy and white panels, connecting with a bright orange). Love it!
