6 scallops = about 5 in. (12.5 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Ch 102.
Row 1: Work 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook (first scallop made), *sk next 2 ch, (sc, 2 dc) in next ch (scallop made); rep from * across to last 3 ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in last ch - 33 scallops at the end of this row.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in first sc, *sk next 2 dc, (sc, 2 dc) in next sc; rep from * across, sc in top of turning ch.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 28 in. (71 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.

Ch 4.
Row 1: Work 2 dc in 4th ch from hook.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc in this row and in all following rows), turn, 2 dc in first dc, dc in next dc, 3 dc in top of beg ch - 7 dc at the end of this row.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, dc in first dc, dc in each dc across to beg ch, 2 dc in top of beg ch - 9 dc at the end of this row.
Row 4: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first dc, dc in each dc across to beg ch, 3 dc in top of beg ch - 13 dc at the end of this row.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 until there are 49 dc.
Next Row (Hood Edging): Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first dc, *sk next 2 dc, (sc, 2 dc) in next dc; rep from * across, sc in top of beg ch. Fasten off.

With right side facing, pin Hood over one corner of Blanket, matching edges. Join yarn with sl st to one corner of Blanket.
Round 1: Ch 2, 2 dc in same corner, work (sc, 2 dc) evenly spaced around entire outside edge of Blankie, working through both thicknesses when working over Hood at corner.
Notes: For best results, take care to work (sc, 2 dc) in each corner of Blankie.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

All-Star Hooded Blankie Reviewed by Vanessa Tower on 2014-09-22 *****
I have made 5 of these over the years and they are just beautiful. They are super easy, but others don't realize that. I was horrified when a grandmother at a baby shower asked me where the pattern came from. I have always told the mom, that if she wanted me to enlarge it later to tell me because it would be easy to remove the hood and make it bigger. Happy Hooking!
