GAUGE:

16 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in cable pattern

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

3-LT (3-st Left Twist) Sl first st as if to knit, k1, yarn over, k1, pass the slipped st over these last 3 sts and off the needle.

NOTES:

1. Cowl beg at lower edge and is worked back and forth in rows to neck. Piece is then joined and worked in rnds.

Side Slit Cabled Cowl Reviewed by Victoria Bergesen on 2012-08-23 *****
This is a fun pattern to make. There is just enough variation in stitches to keep it interesting, without making it too difficult. It knits up quickly in #5 Bulky yarn.
I did use a fine crochet hook, when pulling the slipped stitch over the following three (3LT).
