Adult Striped House Socks

GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

STRIPE SEQUENCE
Note:
When changing color, do not cut yarn; carry unused color up wrong side of work.
*Beg with A, work 4 rnds each of A and B alternately until 8 stripes have been worked (4 each of A and B).
Beg with A, work 2 rnds each of A and B alternately until 6 stripes have been worked (3 each of A and B).
Beg with A, work 1 rnd each of A and B alternately until 8 stripes have been worked (4 each of A and B).
Beg with A, work 2 rnds each of A and B alternately until 6 stripes have been worked (3 each of A and B).
Rep from * for Stripe Sequence.

NOTES:

1. Socks are worked in rnds on double-pointed needles, changing color as in Stripe Sequence. Heel and toe are worked with A only.
2. Socks are worked from top down.
3. Bottom of heel is shaped (turned) using short rows.
4. Length of foot can be worked to any desired length. Measure foot from back of heel to tip of longest toe.

SOCK (make 2)
Leg

With A, cast on 44 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Changing color as in Stripe Sequence, work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds for 3/4 in. (2 cm)
Change to St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) and continue to change color as in Stripe Sequence until piece measures about 6 in. (15 cm) from beg. Make a careful note of which rnd of the Stripe Sequence you last worked.

Heel Flap
Notes:

1. Heel flap is worked back and forth in rows over 22 sts only, on 2 needles. The rem 22 sts, on the other 2 needles, are for the instep (top of foot), and will be worked again after the heel is complete.
2. Heel flap and heel are worked with A only. Place last 22 sts worked onto a holder for top of foot (instep), and continue on rem 22 sts only for heel. Change to A. Make a note of where you left off in the Stripe Sequence. Remove beg of rnd marker.
Row 1: Sl 1 as if to purl, k21.
Row 2: Sl 1 as if to purl, p21.
Rep last 2 rows until heel flap measures about 2 1/4 in. (5.5 cm), end with a purl row, ready to work a knit row.

Turn Heel
Note:
To turn (shape) the heel, short rows are worked over the 22 heel flap sts. Short rows are rows that are worked over a portion of the sts in a row. To work short rows, the instructions will tell you to 'turn' before you reach the end of the row, when you turn, you will leave the rem sts unworked.
Row 1 (RS): K13, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, k6, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 5: Sl 1, k8, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 6: Sl 1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 7: Sl 1, k10, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 8: Sl 1, p11, p2tog, p1, turn - 14 sts rem for heel.

Next Rnd (RS): With A, k across heel sts; with same needle, pick up and k14 sts across side of heel flap; with needles 2 and 3, k across 22 top of foot sts from holder; with needle 4, pick up and k14 sts across other side of heel flap and with same needle k across 7 of the heel sts - 64 sts at the end of this rnd. Place marker, this is the new beg of rnd.

Gusset
Resume working in Stripe Sequence, beg where you left off before working heel.
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: K to last 3 sts on first needle, k2tog, k1; on 2nd and 3rd needles, k across; on 4th needle, k1, ssk, k to end of rnd - 62 sts sts at the end of this rnd.
Rep last 2 rnds until 44 sts rem.

Foot
Continue to change color as in Stripe Sequence and work in St st until foot measures about 7 1/2 in. (19.5 cm) or 2 in. (5 cm) less than desired total foot length, end with a rnd worked with B.

Shape Toe
Change to A. Work toe with A only.
Rnd 1: *K to last 3 sts on first needle, k2tog, k1; on 2nd needle, k1, ssk, k to end of needle; on 3rd needle, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on 4th needle, k1, ssk, k to end of rnd - 40 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until 16 sts rem. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

Graft Toe
Divide remaining sts onto 2 needles. Holding the 2 needles parallel with WS of fabric together, thread a blunt needle with yarn end and work as follows: Insert needle as if to purl into the first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into the first stitch on the back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 below.
1) Insert needle as if to knit through the first st on the front needle and let the st drop from the needle.
2) Insert needle into the second st on the front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle.
3) Insert needle into the first st on the back needle as if to purl and let the st drop from the needle, then 4) Insert needle as if to knit through the second st on the back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. Rep steps 1-4 until all sts have been grafted. When finished, adjust tension as necessary.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
