GAUGE: 20 sts + 25 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) with larger needles over St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT With smaller needles and A, cast on 72 (80, 88) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles and place marker for beg of rnd. Change to larger needles. Note: To change to larger double pointed needles, just exchange one needle at a time as you work the next rnd. Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 4 (4 1/2, 5) in. (10 (11.5, 12.5) cm) from beg.
