Loom Knit And Felted Bag
Lion Brand® Alpine Wool - Fishermen's Wool®
GAUGE: 10 stitches = about 4 in. (10 cm) with 1 strand of A OR 2 strands of C held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: 1. The instructions provided in the loom manual for casting on are the same for both flat knitting and knitting in the round (when you make a tube). These instructions are listed under the heading of SINGLE KNITTING.
2. Follow loom manual instructions for SINGLE KNITTING for how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off.
3. Follow loom manual instructions for CHANGING COLOR.
4. Bag is worked in 4 pieces: Bag Body, Base and 2 Straps.
5. Bag Body and Base are knit in the round. Once you've cast on, continue knitting in a clockwise direction around loom for single knitting in the round.
6. Straps are worked back and forth in rows on a semi-circle piece. The curved shape of the semi-circle piece does not affect the shape of the finished knit fabric.
7. Due to the nature of the felting process, the size of your finished pieces can vary.

BAG
Bag Body and Base Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 28-hole semi-circle pieces, (2) 36-hole pieces, (4) 12-hole pieces, (4) 6-hole pieces.
Connect pieces to form an oval as follows: 28-hole semi-circle piece > 36-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > 28-hole semi-circle piece > 36-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece
Insert one large contrast color peg anywhere along loom set-up to mark the beginning of round. Continue placing large pegs into every other hole along each 28-hole semi-circle piece, 36-hole piece, 12-hole piece and 6-hole piece - 100 working pegs placed.
BODY
With one strand of A, and starting at contrast color peg, cast onto every peg.
Knit in the round until piece measures about 16 1/2 in. (42 cm) from beginning, then work in Stripe Sequence as follows, following loom manual for changing color:
STRIPE SEQUENCE
Knit 2 rounds with one strand of B;
Knit 4 rounds with one strand of A;
Knit 8 rounds with one strand of B;
Knit 4 rounds with one strand of A;
Knit 2 rounds with one strand of B;
Knit 10 rounds with one strand of A;
Purl one round with one strand of A to make hemline;
Knit 4 rounds with one strand of A for hem.
Bind off.
BASE
With 2 strands of C held together and starting at contrast color peg, cast onto every peg.
With 2 strands of C, knit in the round until piece measures about 7 1/2 in. (19 cm) from beginning.
Bind off.
STRAPS (make 2)
Loom Configuration
Use the following piece: (1) 28-hole semi-circle piece.
Insert 12 large pegs into every other hole along semi-circle piece - 12 working pegs placed.
With 2 strands of C, cast onto every working peg.
Knit every row until piece measures about 55 in. (140 cm) from beginning.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Flatten Bag Body and seam cast on edge for bottom seam. Turn Bag wrong side out and flatten Bag so that bottom seam is centered. Mark a 3 in. (7.5 cm) line across both lower corners of Bag Body, at a right angle to bottom seam (see diagram). Sew along marked lines to make bottom of Bag.
Flatten Base and seam cast on edge for bottom seam. Mark and sew corners same as for the Bag Body. Turn Base right side out.
Fold down top edge of Bag Body to the wrong side along the hemline and sew in place. Turn Bag Body and Base right side out.
Fold each Strap in half lengthwise and seam long sides together. Seam can be on the outside of the Strap since the stitches will not be very visible after the felting process.
Felting
Wash pieces by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. Pull pieces into shape and allow to air dry. If needed, use steam iron to shape pieces.
Slip Base over Bag Body. With C threaded into embroidery needle, work blanket stitch around top edge of Base, sewing through both layers to attach Base to Bag Body.
Position a Strap onto one side of Bag, with ends of Strap at top edge of Base. Pin Strap to Bag. Try on Bag and check Strap length. If needed, Strap ends can be trimmed shorter - the felting process will prevent the fabric from unraveling.
With C threaded into embroidery needle, sew sides of Strap to Bag Body.
Attach second Strap to other side of Bag.
With B threaded into embroidery needle, sew a large 'X' though each end of each Strap, sewing through Bag Body. |
