Loom Knit Cable Hat And Wristers
Lion Brand® Hometown USA®
GAUGE:
11 stitches = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern.
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
PATTERN STITCHES
2-stitch Cable Twist
In the 2-stitch Cable, you switch the position of 2 loops as follows:
1. With your left hand, lift the loop from the next peg and hold this loop in front of the knitting on your loom
2. With your right hand, lift the loop from the next peg and move it onto the empty peg from Step 1
3. Place the loop in your left hand onto the empty peg from Step 2
4. Knit off both pegs
HAT
Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 28-hole semi-circular pieces, (4) 12-hole pieces.
Connect pieces to form an oval as follows: 28-hole semi-circular piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 28-hole semi-circular piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece.
Insert one large contrast color peg anywhere along loom set-up to mark beginning of round, skip one hole, then insert a large peg into the next hole. Continue placing large pegs into every other hole along each 28-hole semi-circular piece and each 12-hole piece - 52 working pegs placed.
Notes
1. Hat is knit in the round.
2. The instructions provided in the loom manual for casting on are the same for both flat knitting and knitting in the round (when you make a tube). These instructions are listed under the heading of SINGLE KNITTING.
3. Once you've cast on for the Hat, continue knitting in a clockwise direction around loom for single knitting in the round.
4. A contrast color peg is used to mark the beginning of each round for the Hat.
Follow loom manual instructions for SINGLE KNITTING for how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off in the gathered method.
Beginning at contrast color peg, cast onto every peg. Round 1: *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end of round.
Repeat Round 1 until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beginning. Next Round: Knit, to make cuff fold line.
Cable Pattern for HAT
Rounds 1 and 2: *Purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * to end of round. Round 3: * Purl 2, 2-stitch Cable Twist; repeat from * to end of round. Round 4: * Purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * to end of round.
Beginning with Round 1, work Rounds 1-4 of Cable pattern for Hat until piece measures about 9 in. (23 cm) from cuff fold line.
Bind off in the gathered method. Pull yarn ends to gather top of Hat. Knot to secure.
FINISHING
Thread yarn end into yarn needle provided with loom and weave yarn ends into the inside of the Hat.
WRISTERS (make 2)
Loom Configuration
Use the following pieces: (2) 36-hole pieces, (2) 6-hole pieces, (2) U-shaped pieces.
Connect pieces to form a rectangle as follows: 36-hole piece > 6-hole piece > U-shaped piece > 36-hole piece > 6-hole piece > U-shaped piece.
Place 20 large pegs into every other hole along one 36-hole piece and 6-hole piece and a large contrast color peg at each end - 22 working pegs placed. Place a small peg in each connecting hole to hold loom together.
Notes
1. Wristers are knit as flat pieces and are then seamed.
2. The instructions provided in the loom manual for casting on are the same for both flat knitting and knitting in the round (when you make a tube). These instructions are listed under the heading of SINGLE KNITTING.
3. Once you've cast on for the Wristers, begin working back and forth for single knitting.
4. Wristers are knit on only one side of the loom. The loom is configured into a rectangle to make the loom easier to hold.
Follow loom manual instructions for SINGLE KNITTING for how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off.
Beginning at contrast color peg, cast onto working pegs.
Cable Pattern for WRISTERS
Note: See Stitch Explanation at the beginning of this pattern for how to do a 2-st Cable Twist.
Rows 1 and 2: *Purl 2, knit 2; repeat from *to last 2 stitches, purl last 2 stitches. Row 3: * Purl 2, 2-stitch Cable Twist; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, purl last 2 stitches. Row 4: * Purl 2, knit 2; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, purl last 2 stitches.
Repeat Rows 1-4 until piece measures about 9 in. (23 cm) from beginning.
Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail for seaming.
FINISHING
Thread yarn tail into yarn needle provided with loom. Beginning at hand edge of Wrister, seam sides for 1 in. (2.5 cm). Leave 1 1/2 in. (4 cm) unseamed for thumb opening, then sew remainder of seam. Using same needle, weave yarn ends into the inside of the Wrister. Repeat to finish the other Wrister.
I just made this hat and I am very impressed! It looks like it was knitted on needles rather than a loom. I only had two issues with the pattern itself, easy fixes. First, I believe the hat is too tall. Stop knitting at about 7 inches instead of 9 inches after the cuff row and it makes for a nice fit. Next issue I had was the 2 stitch cable twist. It was so tight to preform this stitch and basically impossible. Again, easy fix: loosely e-wrap and knit over the two pegs in the two stitch cable twist first. Then preform the twist. It worked out perfectly. I definitely recommend this pattern. 4 stars instead of 5 because I had to do some tweaking to make the pattern simple.
