SIZE: Small, Medium, Large, 1X, 2X Finished Bust 33 1/2 (36, 38, 40, 42) in. (85 (91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5) cm), including trim. Finished Length 24 1/2 (25, 25, 25 1/2, 26) in. (62 (63.5, 63.5, 65, 66) cm)
Note: Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
15 sts + 27 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Seed st, with A;
15 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Scattered Seed st, with A;
24 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in K2, p2 Rib, with A;
12 sc + 16 rows = 4 in. (10 cm), with 1 strand each of B and C held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
PATTERN STITCHES
K2, p2 Rib (over even number of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; rep from * to end of row. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.
Seed St (over odd number of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1. Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.
Scattered Seed St (multiple of 4 sts + 1)
Row 1 (WS): *K1, p3; rep from * to last st, k1. Row 2: Knit. Row 3: *P2, k1, p1; rep from * to last st, p1. Row 4: Knit.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Scattered Seed st.
NOTES:
1. Body of Vest is worked in one piece, beg at lower edge. Piece is divided at armholes, and Fronts and Back are each worked separately.
2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
3. Body is worked with 1 strand of A. Trim is worked with 1 strand each of B and C held tog.
4. When you see 'as established' in the instructions, this means to continue in the current pattern st. For example, to continue in Seed st, k the purl sts and p the knit sts.
5. When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue working in the pattern st you have established without changing the number of sts.
6. After working increases or decreases, the pattern will tell you to 'maintain the Scattered Seed st pattern as much as possible'. This means that you may not have enough sts to work a complete repeat of the st pattern.
POCKET LININGS (make 2)
With A, cast on 13 sts. Row 1: Work Row 1 of Seed st.
Continue in Seed st until piece measures 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row. Ending with a WS row insures that your yarn will be attached to the right hand side of the Pocket Lining.
Cut yarn, leaving a 30 in. (76 cm) yarn tail. Place sts on a st holder.
BODY
With A, cast on 117 (125, 133, 141, 149) sts.
Work in Seed st until piece measures 4 in. (10 cm) from beg. Pockets
Notes:
1. You will join the Pocket Linings and bind off Body sts for the pocket openings, all in the same row.
2. Sts for each pocket opening on Body are bound off using the yarn tail from each Pocket Lining.
3. Instructions to bind off sts for pocket opening use a straight needle to make the process a bit less awkward. If you prefer, you can bind off the pocket opening sts using the circular needle. Next Row (RS): *K6 (8, 8, 10, 10); continuing with same strand of yarn, k13 sts of Pocket Lining from st holder; with straight needle and yarn tail from Pocket Lining, bind off next 13 sts of Body from circular needle, sl last bound off st from straight needle back onto circular needle; resume knitting Body with circular needle,** k to last 19 (21, 21, 23, 23) sts; rep from * to **, then k to end of row.
Beg with a WS row, work in Scattered Seed st for 5 rows. Shape Waist
Place st markers after st 27 (29, 31, 33, 35) and st 90 (96, 102, 108, 114) to mark sides. Note: As you increase and decrease in the following sections, maintain the Scattered Seed st pattern as much as possible. Decrease Row (RS): *Knit to 2 sts before marker, ssk, slip marker (sm), k2tog; rep from * once more, knit to end of row - 113 (121, 129, 137, 145) sts at the end of this row.
