Side Cable Pullover

Lion Brand« Baby's First®

GAUGE:

12 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10cm) in St st worked in rows (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Body is worked in one piece in the round from lower edge up to armholes, then divided for Front and Back. Front and Back are then worked back and forth in rows on circular needle, as if working on straight needles.
2. Pullover is worked in St st, with just one cable round.

BODY
Cast on 108 (132, 156) sts.
Place a marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures about 11 in. (28 cm) from beg.
Cable Rnd: K19 (25, 31), sl next 8 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work, k8, k8 from cable needle, k to end of rnd. Note: This is the only cable cross in this design.
Work in St st worked in the rnd until piece measures about 17 in. (43 cm) from beg.

Divide for Front and Back
Next Rnd:
*K48 (58, 68) sts, bind off 6 (8, 10) sts for armhole; rep from * once more. Place last 48 (58, 68) sts onto a st holder for Back.
You will now work back and forth in rows on circular needle, as if working on straight needles. Work over rem 48 (58, 68) sts only for Front in St st worked back and forth in rows.

Shape Armhole
Decrease Row (RS):
K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 - 46 (56, 66) sts at the end of this row.
Work even in St st (without increasing or decreasing) for 1 row.
Rep last 2 rows 2 (5, 8) more times - 42 (46, 50) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Work even in St st until armhole measures 6 (7, 8) in. (15 (18, 20.5) cm), end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.

Shape Neck and Shoulder
Next Row (RS):
K12 (13, 14), bind off 18 (20, 22) sts, k12 (13, 14).
Continue on last 12 (13, 14) sts to shape first shoulder.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K2tog, k to end of row - 11 (12, 13) sts at the end of this row.
Rep last 2 rows once more - 10 (11, 12) sts rem for first shoulder.
Work even in St st until first shoulder measures about 2 in. (5 cm). Sl rem 10 (11, 12) sts to a holder.
Rejoin yarn to 12 (13, 14) rem sts (at neck edge) to shape 2nd shoulder.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: K to last 2 sts, k2tog - 10 (11, 12) sts at the end of this row.
Rep last 2 rows once more - 10 (11, 12) sts rem for 2nd shoulder.
Work even in St st until 2nd shoulder measures same as first. Sl rem 10 (11, 12) sts to a holder.

Back
Note:
Back is worked back and forth in rows on circular needle.
Sl the 48 (58, 68) back sts from holder onto needle, ready to work a WS row.
Next Row (WS): Purl.
Shape Armhole
Work same as front armhole shaping until armhole measures 7, (8, 9) in. (18 (20.5, 23 cm), end with a WS row.

Shape Neck and Shoulder
Work same as front neck and shoulder shaping until shoulders measure about 1 in. (2.5 cm). Do not sl sts of 2nd shoulder to a holder.

Seam Shoulders with 3-Needle Bind Off
Notes: Shoulders of Back and Front are joined by working a 3-needle bind off. Seam is meant to show on RS.
Sl sts of one front shoulder - the shoulder that matches the back shoulder still on your needle - back to empty end of needle. With shoulders WS tog, hold both ends of needle in one hand. With a spare needle, knit tog 1 st from each, *knit tog 1 st from each needle, pass first st worked over 2nd to bind off; rep from * across until all sts of shoulder have been joined. Cut working yarn and pull through last st to secure. Sl sts of other back shoulder onto one end of needle and sl sts of other front shoulder onto other end of needle. Rep 3-needle bind off across 2nd shoulder.

SLEEVES (make 2)
Note:
Sleeves are worked back and forth in rows on circular needle.
Cast on 24 (26, 28) sts.
Beg with a RS row (knit), work in St st for 10 (8, 6) rows.
Increase Row: K1, M1, k to last st, M1, K1 - 26 (28, 30) sts at the end of this row.
Work in St st for 9 (7, 5) rows.
Rep Increase Row - 28 (30, 32) sts at the end of this row.
Rep last 10 (8, 6) rows 4 (6, 8) more times - 36 (42, 48) sts when all increases have been completed.
Work even in St st until piece measures 14 (14 1/2, 15) in. (35.5 (37, 38) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Sleeve Cap
Bind off 3 (4, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows - 30 (34, 38) sts when all bind offs have been completed.
Decrease Row (RS): K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog - 28 (32, 36) sts at the end of this row.
Work in St st for 3 rows.
Rep last 4 rows 4 more times - 20 (24, 28) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Rep Decrease Row - 18 (22, 26) sts.
Work in St st for 1 row.
Rep last 2 rows until 14 sts rem.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Neck Edging

With RS facing, use crochet hook to join yarn with sl st to neck at shoulder seam.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work single crochet evenly spaced around neck edge; join with sl st in first st. Fasten off.

If desired, work edging as for neck around lower edge of each Sleeve.
Weave in ends.

Side Cable Pullover Reviewed by Katie on 2013-02-09 ***
6 balls are needed to complete the small size. The way the pattern is written the cable ends up closer to the middle of the front rather than towards one side. To position the cable as pictured, the instructions for "Divide for Front and Back" need to be changed to read as follows:
Next Rnd: *bind off 6 (8,10) sts for armhole, K48 (58, 68) sts; rep from * once more.
After making this change, I found it easier to finish the back first before rejoining the yarn to finish the front.
