GAUGE:

About 16 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
yo (yarn over)
An increase that creates a button hole in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:

1. Body is worked in one piece beg at neck. Yoke (upper portion of Cardi) and sleeves are worked in Garter st, Cardi body is worked in St st with Garter st borders.
2. Front bands are worked as part of the fronts.

3. A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles for Cardi; sleeves are worked in the round on double-pointed needles.

Neck Down Cardi Reviewed by Katrina Siegrist on 2013-11-10 *****
Confession: I am addicted to making this sweater it is so easy and functional (winter w/long sleeves; summer with sundresses). I'm a busy graduate student and I can do this while taking notes in classes. (I don't have time to knit where I need to be fussy with a pattern or count that much.) I generally half the smallest size to make a doll version of the sweater that fits my girls' generic American girl dolls. I'm starting my 9th sweater (including dollie versions) and will be trying it with WoolEase this time round & thinking I may change the st. stitch to a seed stich for the bottom half.
