CORRECTIONS: (applied Dec 18, 2012)
On Rows 3 and 9 of the Pod Stitch pattern, a k5tog is called for. The k5tog decreases 4 sts and looks quite nice in this design.
If you find it difficult to work this decrease, there are a couple of alternatives that you can work in place of the k5tog:
Slip 2 sts together, as if to knit, from left needle to right needle, k next 3 sts together, pass the 2 slipped sts over the k3tog.
Insert a crochet hook through the 5 sts on the left needle, then use the hook to pull the yarn through the sts.
The above is only a summary of corrections; the corrected pattern text is below (if free) or shipped upon completion of order (if purchased)

GAUGE:
12.5 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Pod Stitch. EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
M1P (make 1 st as if to purl) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Purl this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased. (p1, k1, p1) in next stPurl in next st but do not remove st from needle. Take yarn to back between needles, knit the same st, but do not remove st from needle. Bring yarn to front between needles, purl the same st and remove st from needle - 2 sts increased.

COWL Cast on 80 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Work Rows 1-12 of Pod Stitch twice (24 rows total), then work Rows 1-10 once more - piece should measure about 10 1/2 in. (27 cm) from beg. Bind off.
FINISHING Weave in ends.

Pod Stitch Cowl Reviewed by Leah Sowell on 2013-03-26
This kind of pattern is what I call brain food--challenging but satisfying! the results are so lacy and beautiful. The only issue with my finished cowl is how it drapes around my neck, which is completely different than the thick, felty one shown in the picture. the top of mine wants to fall away from my neck and hang straight out at a funny angle; I think my tension was looser (guess that means I should try it again!). I am definitely keeping the stitch pattern.
