EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
dc2tog (dc 2 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook - 1 st decreased. dc3tog (dc 3 sts together) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. (Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops) twice, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook - 2 sts decreased. FPTR (front post treble crochet) Yarn over twice, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st 2 Rows below, draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times. Skip st behind the FPTR. Loop st (worked on RS, all in one st) Insert hook in indicated st and draw up a loop; form a loop in front of work as follows: Bring working yarn to the front; hold working yarn with finger or thumb of hand holding the hook. Leaving a loop of yarn in the front, bring working yarn to back of work. Insert hook in same st and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook to complete the st and lock the loop in place. Puff st (worked on WS, all in one st) (Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop) into same st 5 times, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook. sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. With A, ch 57. Row 1 (RS): Work 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, sk next 2 ch, *(sc, 2 dc) in next ch, sk next 2 ch; rep from * across, sc in last ch - 54 sts at the end of this row. Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 2 dc in first st, sk next 2 sts, *(sc, 2 dc) in next st, sk next 2 sts; rep from * across, sc in top of turning ch.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 10 in. (25.5 cm) from beg. Fasten off.
BLOCK 2
With B, ch 57. Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 56 sts at the end of this row. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, tr in next st, *sc in next 3 sts, tr in next st; rep from * across to last st, sc in last st. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 4 sts, tr in next st, *sc in next 3 sts, tr in next st; rep from * across to last 3 sts, sc in last 3 sts. Row 5: Rep Row 3.

BLOCK 3
With C, ch 61. Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 60 sts at the end of this row. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, work a Loop St in each st across. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg. Fasten off.
BLOCK 4
Notes:
1. Sc2tog over next 2 sts means that you should draw up a loop in each of the indicated sts or ch-sps, then yarn over and draw through all loops on the hook to complete the sc2tog.
2. Sc2tog decreases are offset by matching ch-1 increases, so total number of sts will not change.
With D, ch 66. Row 1: Work sc2tog over 2nd ch from hook and next ch, *ch 1, sc2tog over next 2 ch; rep from * across to last ch, ch 1, sc in last ch - 65 sts at the end of this row. Segment B
Work as for Segment A.
Segment C
Work as for Segment A until piece measures 24 in. (61 cm). Fasten off.
Segment D
Work as for Segment A until piece measures 20 in. (51 cm). Fasten off.
FINISHING
Following Assembly Diagram, sew Blocks together. Following Assembly Diagram for placement, sew Road Segments and River to Throw, curving River as you sew. Weave in ends.

Really excellent throw. I made it using baby weight yarn and in pastel colours for my friend's baby. It was time consuming but because of the varied blocks never boring. I also left out the road and river.
It might be because of the different weight yarn, but the chain lengths were deceiving. Because of the varied stitches, I would trust to your own judgement on how long the block should be rather than go by the number of chain stitches.
