7 sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Hat is worked back and forth in rows, from lower edge to top (crown).
2. The crown is shaped and gathered, then Hat is seamed.

Cast on 34 sts.
Knit 2 rows.
Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beg, end with a WS row. Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
Next Row (RS): *K3, k2tog, k2, k2tog; rep from * to last 7 sts, k3, k2tog, k2 - 27 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: *K2, k2tog, k1, k2tog; rep from * to last 6 sts, k2, k2tog, k2 - 20 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: *K1, (k2tog) twice; rep from * to end of row - 12 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: (K2tog) 6 times - 6 sts.
Next Row: Purl.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts, pull to gather, and knot securely.

Seam Hat. If desired, use sewing thread to seam.
Following package directions, make a medium size pom-pom.
Tie pom-pom to top of Hat. Weave in ends.

Very Berry Hat Reviewed by Stephanie Adams on 2010-11-26 ****
This was my first hat. It went really quickly and the directions were easy to follow. Maybe because I am new to making hats but it was such a small hat I gave it to my 3 year old daughter. It was beautiful on her and she adores it. I would recommend doubling the cast on stitches for an adult hat.
